Designer Christian Siriano offers to help make protective masks for coronavirus health workers
By Judy Kurtz - 03/20/20 02:34 PM EDT

Fashion designer Christian Siriano is offering the use of his design team to produce face masks to help with reported hospital supply shortages due to the coronavirus.

The 34-year-old fashion pro and "Project Runway" alum tweeted on Friday:

Christian Siriano

@CSiriano

If @NYGovCuomo says we need masks my team will help make some. I have a full sewing team still on staff working from home that can help.

State officials across the country have said they've faced a shortage of masks and other equipment to help protect health care workers treating patients with the coronavirus. Many hospitals have indicated that they're quickly depleting their stockpiles of masks.

On Thursday, the British Fashion Council urged designers to "help in the manufacture of essential products including masks."

"In times of need," the British nonprofit wrote on Instagram, "the fashion industry can be of service."

There are many unemployed Broadway wardrobe workers also wanting to do this work but we are unable to find an actual trustworthy resource we can work with.

I don't know that they can make anything like N95 masks, but whatever they can produce will be a damn sight better than, "you can wear a bandana." Good for Siriano and his team for stepping up!

Super-tall, skinny beauty queen with long straight hair, the designers would have been fighting for the chance to dress her.

She's got the height to carry that design.

3D print a re-usable silicone mask. There are free plans out there somewhere.

Have medical device personnel determine if the free plans really work

Download the free file. Print up the mask. Silicone, so it's reuseable.''

The 3D printer could also print up personal protection shields. Tubing, parts for medical devices.

The cloth mask idea won't work.

The 3D printers are already public property. The supply chain on the materials may become problematic. That's why a medical device pro should make sure the plan is viable before wasting limited silicone filament printing up something that won't work.
