DU scientists and others please splain this to me. Some guy gets on Tucker Calson

(alarm bells ok) and says this Australian team has found that a combination of a hydroxychloroquine and Azithromycin CURED Covid 19 .

It is reported in the Daily Wire, (Don't flame me I'm just reporting here!)

https://www.dailywire.com/news/french-peer-reviewed-study-our-treatment-cured-100-of-coronavirus-patients?fbclid=IwAR2DaH9C0ZumXaLrEUwuUof9ZNi7BgDXJ1QkvTMyycfRqqUBBaWFmw-gKlQ

Anyway, I was able to find the actual paper and though I am not a scientist it sounds promising. I imagine that groups all over the world are trying to find a cure now because they would become famous and rich really fast.

Here is a link to an update from the paper. Please peruse...............

French Confirmed COVID-19 patients were included in a single arm protocol from early
March to March 16th, to receive 600mg of hydroxychloroquine daily and their viral load in
nasopharyngeal swabs was tested daily in a hospital setting. Depending on their clinical
presentation, azithromycin was added to the treatment. Untreated patients from another center
and cases refusing the protocol were included as negative controls. Presence and absence of
virus at Day6-post inclusion was considered the end point.
Results
Six patients were asymptomatic, 22 had upper respiratory tract infection symptoms and eight
had lower respiratory tract infection symptoms.
Twenty cases were treated in this study and showed a significant reduction of the viral
carriage at D6-post inclusion compared to controls, and much lower average carrying duration
than reported of untreated patients in the literature. Azithromycin added to
hydroxychloroquine was significantly more efficient for virus elimination.

Conclusion

Despite its small sample size our survey shows that hydroxychloroquine treatment is
significantly associated with viral load reduction/disappearance in COVID-19 patients and its
effect is reinforced by azithromycin.

Antiretrovirals used for HIV are being found effective for significantly dropping viral loads of COVID-19 patients.

Protease Inhibitors (PIs)
These drugs block a protein that infected cells need to put together new HIV virus particles.

Atazanavir or ATV (Reyataz)
Darunavir or DRV (Prezista)
Fosamprenavir or FPV (Lexiva)
Indinavir or IDV (Crixivan)
Lopinavir + ritonavir, or LPV/r (Kaletra)
Nelfinavir or NFV (Viracept)
Ritonavir or RTV (Norvir)
Saquinavir or SQV (Invirase, Fortovase)
Tipranavir or TPV (Aptivus)

that do come out on such therapies. I assume that the names you mentioned are the specific and generic names for the same thing, i.e., lansoprazole vs. prevacid? Thanks and be safe.

3. Not a scientist but this article in the Guardian yesterday

Had a brief lay person’s description of this. Here is the excerpt:

The anti-malaria drug: chloroquine
Chloroquine is a cheap, widely available drug that has been routinely used since 1945 against malaria and other conditions and can be safely taken by pregnant women and children. Lab studies found the antiviral drug was effective against the coronavirus, at least in a petri dish, and results from a small French study in 24 patients, announced this week, suggested that it could quicken recovery.

Doctors said 25% of patients who received the drug tested positive for the virus after six days, compared with 90% of those who did not receive it. Chloroquine and a related drug, hydroxychloroquine, are among the four treatments tested in an international clinical trial, announced on Wednesday by the World Health Organization (WHO), and the UK has added chloroquine to its list of medicines under export controls.

their experience, which was positive. Similar articles from China, WSJ on docs here, Korea, etc. Sorry, I’m on phone or I’d provide a link.

Honestly, I’m not as ticked at trump as some for offering some hope in this regard. But, that’s about the only thing I’m not ticked at in all this.

I think some of the docs appearing with trump need to loosen up on their double-blind, long-term clinical studies in this situation. Apparently there is no real downside to using these meds in a closely monitored hospital setting vs. doing nothing.

And it’s a cheap med, readily available. If I believed in conspiracy theories, I’d say some of these docs must be stockholders in the big bucks pharmaceutical companies looking to make a killing.

7. I think of it like this
Fri Mar 20, 2020, 07:05 PM
Mar 2020

Teams all over the world will be trying various treatments to see if they speed recovery or lessen symptoms.

We will be hearing optimistic news every time there is a positive result.

Figuring what is really effective is going to take work, controlled trials and time.

If we find treatments that work it will take more time to ramp up production world wide.

If we have effective treatments available that makes it easier to figure out how to get past the current large scale isolation.

In other words expect and hope to hear more encouraging news but don’t expect anything to get better very quickly.
