Coronavirus prevention: Nigeria's Lagos state battling chloroquine poisoningMarch 20: Chloroquine posioning in Lagos
An official of Nigerias Lagos State government has disclosed that hospitals are receiving patients suffering from chloroquine poisoning.
Oreoluwa Finnih, a Senior Special Assistant to Lagos governor has thus urged the public to desist from using the anti-malaria drug as a measure of preventing coronavirus infection. In Nigeria reports indicate that the drugs price has been hiked since the news broke.
Chloroquine has been gaining traction on social media since some news agencies reported it had been approved for the COVID-19 pandemic.
The outlets cited U.S. president Donald Trump as making the claims. Americas Food and Drugs Authority, FDA, has since disclaimed the assertion saying the drug has not been cleared for any such purpose.

People in African countries are likely to get chloroquine fairly easily, since they live in areas where there is malaria. I believe you take a low dose as a prophylactic. Its not a remedy.

(14,997 posts)I think we took it when we went to Africa last year. It made me really sick to my stomach so I quit taking it.
Ah. A vacation. That seems like so long ago. Won't be taking any of those for a while.

(16,829 posts)It does cause upset stomach and diarrhea.
So you don't get malaria, which gives you severe diarrhea, but you get upset stomach and diarrhea.

(14,997 posts)That's what we took. Didn't have any problems at all after I stopped taking it. And no malaria either. Still can't donate blood for another four months, though.

A girl in that Christian school I went to when I was a kid told me in first grade that if you shave above your knees, you'll get cancer. Not long after that, I learned she was full of shit.
It's called learning. If you hear stupid shit, confirm whether it is true or not.
Stupidity is going to be the thing that does the human species in. The species' own stupidity. How fucking hard is it to stay the fuck home and goof off for a few weeks?

"Didier Raoult, director of a university hospital institute in Marseille, explained that he had conducted a clinical trial in which he treated 25 Covid-19 patients with hydroxychloroquine. After six days, he said, only 25 percent of patients who took this drug still had the virus in their body. By contrast, 90 percent of those who had not taken hydroxychloroquine continued to carry the Covid-19."

Doctors Turn to Malaria Drugs as Potential Coronavirus Treatment

But there are a lot of people in the world who don't have access to good information or medical treatment. Its criminal for POTUS to start talking about drugs when he doesn't know shit about them.

(13,935 posts)This is not a laughing matter. People around the world have their antennae up for alternate ways to keep people alive until a vaccine is on the market. During the interim drugs already on the market maybe cross purposed to keep COVID-19 patients on their death bed alive.
An example of Cross Purposing Pharmaceuticals: Minoxidil.
Oral minoxidil was originally used for treating high blood pressure, but patients and health care providers noticed that hair growth was a side effect of treatment. ... The FDA then approved minoxidil for hair regrowth.in August 1988

Anti-malarials and anti-retroviral drugs currently on the market show some promise. Drug studies should be done to help high risk patients who will die if they do not receive some medical interventions.
How doctors can potentially significantly reduce the number of deaths from Covid-19
We already have medicines for treating cytokine storm syndrome, the immune response thats killing many who die of Covid-19.
Anti-malarial and anti- retroviril drugs currently on the market show promising results to save a patient from cytokine storm syndrome which is causing the death of COVID-19 patients.

(2,009 posts)Here's what she says in an article in the Hill:
Fox News's Laura Ingraham on Thursday said she'd be willing to volunteer to test whether hydroxychloroquine, a drug used on malaria and arthritis patients, could help with the coronavirus.
Ingraham on her show said a controlled 2,000-patient study "could be organized pretty quickly" given the high stakes.
"I have a feeling given the fact that most of the countries are locked down right now, the controlled study of 2,000 patients could be organized pretty quickly, given what is at stake here," Ingraham said. "I'll happily volunteer. If you're looking for volunteers, I'll volunteer."
In light of the information from the OP in this thread, I say we take her up on her offer!
