He said there was already a crowd. He noticed that meat prices were about 50 percent higher than normal, everything else that was available was about 30 percent higher than normal.
Good Lord people are losing their jobs, the country is coming apart and the stores that are open are jacking up prices. That $1000 of McConnel's isn't going far.

(23,218 posts)I'm up all night on eBay (all night, every night) basically hitting refresh and when someone puts up a bulk amount of N-95's, I buy them. People are price gouging terribly.
Ebay has a take down policy now for sellers listing N-95's in bulk and price gouging, so they're taking listings down so I have to act fast.
I just paid another $1K for about 80 or so N-95's. I just can't keep up at this rate financially so I'm going to have to stop soon.
I'm just exhausted and terrified but that doesn't matter at this point.
The shortages are on everything now, not only N-95's, lock and key. (Patients and some staff were stealing them)
They're not wearing hazmat suits but flimsy gowns. No goggles, masks or much of anything. Think Grey's Anatomy vs. (the movie) Outbreak.
I applaud ALL of our healthcare workers in the world, hearing of all of the stories, risk of contagion, etc., I don't know how they're doing it.
The government needs to get vents as soon as possible, otherwise when this surge hits cities (and it will hard) there will not be enough vents for everyone sick and decisions will have to be made. I'm sure you know what those are.
If anyone wants to help and has a surplus of any of the above items (or whatever else you may think of), please drop them off at your local hospital.
If people want to help but don't have access to the above, send pizzas, donuts or whatever you can think of to your local hospitals. Staff don't have time to prepare food, so a quick slice of pizza or donut would be a nice gesture for them as they're working around the clock and hungry.
As for a view from inside the ICU, it's like that out of a horror story. Our medical professionals are going to have PTSD by the time this is over, in my opinion. It's not only the elderly with health issues but healthy people with many young. (40's and 50's)
I will say this, it's bad in the hospitals and if it isn't in your area now, it will be at some point. We haven't even surged here yet and we're out (or nearly) out of everything. A surge is being predicted here within the next week. Cases are rising overnight.
My son's girlfriend is an ICU nurse (different hospital than he) and has had no mask or anything covering her mouth/eyes, etc. for a few weeks, she knows she's going to get this and is scared from what she's seen. Some hospitals have not been allowing staff to bring in their own items but staff are ignoring this and improvising as best as they can. His girlfriend is now doing this, as well.
I've been told of what ICU's are like and what this virus does to the body.....it's just unimaginable, a true horror story that remains in my brain even though I've not seen it firsthand.
I'm in a red zone and hospitals are expecting a surge in less than a week. People are still outside in groups and we do need some type of lock down or curfew at the very least. Everyone seems to have that "that can't happen to me attitude."
From what my kids have told me, they said the biggest message they wish local/state and federal governments would say would be to "Stay home, unless absolutely necessary." Those who don't are just making their lives harder and putting them and their families at home at risk.
They also said pictures of the ICU should be shown on the media, not for sensationalism but to get people to STAY HOME.
Will update the situation as soon as I can gather my thoughts and think straight.
Feel free to re-post if you'd like and I'll update as soon as I can.
WE NEED MORE TESTS!
Thank you.

HEB has been really good about not price gouging, or not that I've seen or heard about. And my husband is right there in the trenches with inventory and pricing. But it's one of those regional chains that is big on community involvement and being a good neighbor. They did just announce that, unlike other businesses that are cutting jobs, hours and pay during this, they're adding a $2/hr bonus to every worker's pay while this corona madness is going on.

Talked to a guy I used to work with at our local store yesterday and he said every day is now like what a Saturday used to be before all this. (26,236 posts)a thing a number of states enact what is essentially a price freeze so while you might get away with a minor 1% to 5% increase a 30% or more might get you into trouble.

(430 posts)Nixon did it. So did Carter.
We need prices frozen right now so Big Business doesn't take advantage of the situation.
They instituted wage-price freezes. But since 99% of Amurica's good ol' businesses don't give a damn about raising our wages, just a price freeze will do.
Oh wait...who am I kidding. That might make too much sense for us and business would have apoplectic fits.

(5,554 posts)This will be unpopular on here, but rent controls do the same thing. The supply side slowly withers relative to the gap between the suppressed price and what would be it's free float level
If you want more of something, subsidize the supplier. In time they will flood the market.
If you want less of something, tax the consumer. They will reduce consumption.
The above is just a generalization on the topic in the long run.
On this exact situation, some increases are to be expected. Resupply goods are being bought at spot rates rather than long term contracts. Stores are having to work extra to restock and sanitize, often with a reduced workforce due to parents being unavailable with schools closed.

(7 posts)When consumer spending makes up ~65 percent on our economy and reactionary Americans make a run on the supply chain, this is normal. Because our market is free and subject to supply and demand, prices raise. A free market only works if the populace is disciplined enough to not panic buy, this keeps nearly half of our economy stable.
I feel that the economic impact is 99.9% the blame of the American people, and should I find any one that horded TP in my neighborhood, it won't be pretty!

(12,640 posts)As I knew they had gotten a paper products shipment in the day before and wanted to pick up just one six-pack of TP that would last us through the middle of next month...it was all gone by the time I got to the aisle with one lady standing there crying because she had no TP left in the house and three kids.
The sign said "only one product per shopper" but the commissary had made the mistake of opening all the self-check lines and about 40 people were still in line with two or three large packs of TP hidden under the rest of their groceries.
We have enough TP for a week and we can wait, but I was so mad for the lady I made a nasty comment to another lady who was still shopping about how it was only one package per customer when it was obvious she had three...her quick answer - oh, one of these is for my husband and one for my friend and I'm just waiting for them...
Really, WTF does that matter? All I could think of when I saw those three obvious packages was that poor crying lady and the stunned elderly couple coming up behind her looking at the empty shelves behind her - only 10 minutes after the store opened.
Does "waiting on my husband and friend" justify three giant roll 12 packs that should last the average family with 2 bathrooms 6 months at least?
Our family of four could get by on one of those over almost three months, even using some of it to pick up the occasional hairball.
Our family can last a week longer and I've got enough bleach, buckets and old cotton sheets that we can make due longer using the old "cloth diaper" method of dealing with sanitary products. We also have hand-held shower heads in our tub and shower for a makeshift bidet.
But I'm old school, and don't mind doing laundry every day if I have to.
No reason to hoard and mess with your fellow servicemembers and vulnerable elderly and families.

At several large chains around me no meat, eggs, milk, canned food...plenty of fruits and vegetables. On the Nextdoor app people kindly post where they find stuff that day, usually in the early morning, but I dont want to run out each day for things I dont have and increase exposure. I went to Kroger and bought enough for a week, even though its stuff I normally dont eat or buy. It was doable with some sacrifice-taste/preference/price-which is worth it to limit contact. Liquor sales soared before Pennsylvania state stores closed for pandemic
Liquor sales shot up by more than 58% in Pennsylvania between March 1 and March 17, compared to the same time period last year, according to data released by the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board Friday.
People rushed to the PLCBs Fine Wine & Good Spirits stores in the days before the end of business Tuesday, when Gov. Wolf indefinitely closed all state stores in an attempt to stem the spread of the coronavirus.
According to the PLCB, Pennsylvanians spent more than $181 million in liquor through March 17 this month, up from $114 million during the same period last year. The PLCB figures include retail consumers, licensees, and online sales.
Sales were also up in January by 6% and in February by 12%. Overall through March 17 of this year, PLCB sales were up 21% compared to last year.

(45,380 posts)Yeah, I get your point on meat. As far restocking, meat is lower priority and takes more time to get to market from producers. Lots of nonperishables are just taken from warehouses and trucked to stores but meat requires some killing and processing first.
I've been through lean times before so while hoarders were hoarding toilet paper, I got some meat (not a lot) and froze it. My main priority is getting fresh produce and finding more cleaning supplies when mine run out since I'm running low after doing a lot of cleaning this past week.

(25,428 posts)The picture used to "prove" they were raising prices shows two different product codes.

Menards indicated that the two products were concentrated vs. non-concentrated.
"Menards spokesman Jeff Abbott said in a statement that the Wisconsin-based chain considered the Clorox price reasonable because, while like other bleach it was sold in a gallon jug, it was more concentrated and would last customers twice as long."
Here are the two different products:

(783 posts)2 freezers stocked with venison, duck, turkey and goose. Even have a pile of brats made from the venison and goose. Other good thing is that mushroom and wild asparagus season is fast approaching so theres that as well.

(26,047 posts)DeSantis is an evil fuck, but he declared a public emergency weeks ago, and just like when it's done for hurricanes, this kind of stuff is illegal.
Also, no legitimate grocery chain would do something like this now, so change where you shop.
