Trump labels a reporter's question about a lack of surgical masks as fake news, Fauci disagrees.

Aaron Rupar
@atrupar

After Trump basically labels a reporter's question about a lack of surgical masks as fake news, Fauci takes the mic and tells the reporter, "you're not making things up. I know that."

They're NOT throwing them away (which would be normal. But what is NORMAL right now ?), they're trying to disinfect them and reuse them. Which is NOT how it works. The virus can stay on surfaces for hours. Hell, bacteria can rest on a surface for NINE DAYS.

Our health care workers NEED the PPE and DME goods NOW. And trumpie is just LYING OUT HIS ASS right now about pretty much EVERYFUCKINGTHING.

I have hated the criticism I have seen of him on DU in recent days, stuff like he has sold out, he's now as bad as the rest in praising trump.
He has probably been fired or threatened with firing dozens of times recently. He is walking a fine line to do what he can to help us, and he has to stay on TV to do that.

He's the Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

Dr. Fauci was appointed director of NIAID in 1984. He oversees an extensive portfolio of basic and applied research to prevent, diagnose, and treat established infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS, respiratory infections, diarrheal diseases, tuberculosis and malaria as well as emerging diseases such as Ebola and Zika. NIAID also supports research on transplantation and immune-related illnesses, including autoimmune disorders, asthma and allergies. The NIAID budget for fiscal year 2020 is an estimated $5.9 billion.

Dr. Fauci has advised six presidents on HIV/AIDS and many other domestic and global health issues. He was one of the principal architects of the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), a program that has saved millions of lives throughout the developing world.

Dr. Fauci also is the longtime chief of the Laboratory of Immunoregulation. He has made many contributions to basic and clinical research on the pathogenesis and treatment of immune-mediated and infectious diseases. He helped pioneer the field of human immunoregulation by making important basic scientific observations that underpin the current understanding of the regulation of the human immune response. In addition, Dr. Fauci is widely recognized for delineating the precise ways that immunosuppressive agents modulate the human immune response. He developed effective therapies for formerly fatal inflammatory and immune-mediated diseases such as polyarteritis nodosa, granulomatosis with polyangiitis (formerly Wegener's granulomatosis), and lymphomatoid granulomatosis. A 1985 Stanford University Arthritis Center Survey of the American Rheumatism Association membership ranked Dr. Fauci’s work on the treatment of polyarteritis nodosa and granulomatosis with polyangiitis among the most important advances in patient management in rheumatology over the previous 20 years.

Dr. Fauci has made seminal contributions to the understanding of how HIV destroys the body's defenses leading to its susceptibility to deadly infections. Further, he has been instrumental in developing treatments that enable people with HIV to live long and active lives. He continues to devote much of his research to the immunopathogenic mechanisms of HIV infection and the scope of the body's immune responses to HIV.

In a 2019 analysis of Google Scholar citations, Dr. Fauci ranked as the 41st most highly cited researcher of all time. According to the Web of Science, he ranked 8th out of more than 2.2 million authors in the field of immunology by total citation count between 1980 and January 2019.

He's what should be in our government... a calm, honest, apolitical expert.

Too bad the 'man' in charge is such an arrogantly ignorant narcissistic 'personality'.

It is easy for you to make that kumbaya call, but a monster is in charge, there IS a valid question now about whether Fauci is freely doing his job, or is he having to defer to an egomaniac each day. I still think that he would like get more done working with Biden and university researchers from around the world that he would working under an insecure racist who make a point of calling the virus the "Chinese virus".

Even Reagan, with his tone deafness to the spread of AIDS let scientists do their jobs. There is no contemporary record of Trump letting those under him do their jobs when they contradict his bullshit.

I am not accusing the man of not doing his job, my initial point was that he very well could accomplish more by leaving working under Trump and joining leaders that value scientific input and use it when making policy.

He makes up shit on the fly and believes it because he says it. Or, he hears something about a possible cure in passing, and then broadcasts it without confirmation and then his "team" is left to pick up the pieces and walk back the bullshit. The problem is, half of the U.S. population still thinks he's doing a good job. The mind boggles at this.

22. Trump Body Language: Starting at 30 seconds - second video with Fauci
Sat Mar 21, 2020, 08:15 PM
Mar 2020

Second video above: Trump is hanging over Fauci like he did Hillary at the debates. Fauci, after saying "What you've just heard about the different avenues, some of which aren't even recognized about how you can get help" (it sounds like Trump wrote that for him), he says "In addition to the large amounts of additional PPE that's coming in to the system, we hope ...". Trump reacts visibly. He got what he wanted.

In reality Fauci gave a bunch of bullshit: "some of which aren't recognized" (a typical Trump slam against the press who won't report on Trumps Genius, but Fauci will by proxy).

As well as "In addition to the large amounts ... coming in to the system". Really? Where are they coming from? I see some volunteers sewing masks, and Musk is doing something, but what about the DPA, which Trump also touted as one his accomplishments? At least someone said something to stroke Trumps ego.
