we are now being asked for a stimulus that is in excess of 10% of our GDP.
Here's a better idea. Let's distribute that 10% of GDP in the form of wage increases for middle class and poor workers.
Use that 10% of GDP to pay those department, grocery store, service industry, cooks and wait staff, etc., $17-20 per hour... minimum.
Maybe, if the majority of working class Americans made more money, maybe they could save enough money to cover a month or two for emergencies when you combine it with good unemployment compensation.
Maybe, we wouldn't need so much of a bailout if we paid workers for the wealth they create.
This crisis is showing us alot about our shortcomings as a country.
Let's hope that one lesson we don't forget is how millions of Americans are just one missed paycheck from financial ruin.
Whatever we do better address that, or we will be right back here in a few years for the next disaster.

(15,323 posts)My point is, going forward, if we are throwing around 10% of our GDP, let's make sure we throw it to the working class and poor Americans.
We need massive pay increases across the board for middle class and low wage Americans.
In a country that is this wealthy, there is no reason that working Americans are unable to put enough funds away to cover a month or two of crisis.
That's one of the things this disaster is laying bare.
The millions of Americans that are one missed paycheck away from financial ruin, homelessness and starvation.
That's not an exception to the rule. That's a feature of trickle down economics.

(15,323 posts)What I am saying is that we need to fix the huge inequality gap going forward.
If we don't destroy the trickle down horseshit, we are going to be in the same boat for the next disaster.
If middle class workers were paid for the wealth they create, they would have the opportunity to save money for emergencies. Their savings and unemployment compensation could get them through.
I'm not taking about not doing direct payment to folks today.

(13,577 posts)should be able to show the wealthy would end up getting a bump too. The catch is that it would narrow the income gap, and that is not allowed.

(5,555 posts)Businesses, especially small ones, are going to need a lot more than just loans.
Workers are going to need more than a $1000 check.
We need to go big and go wide with scope.
Pay for it with aggressive tax hikes in those making over $250k. Also heavy new taxes on stock options and stick buybacks. It will still take many years to get anywhere close to a reasonable deficit (something I can't even remember when we had last)
