Hong Kong Records Its Biggest Rise in Coronavirus Cases as New Wave of Infections Crashes Into Asia

Hong Kong recorded what is by far its biggest daily jump in coronavirus cases on Friday—the latest in a new phase of infected travelers, many of whom are returning to the city from Europe, the United States and Southeast Asia.

The city is not alone in facing the increasing threat of imported cases. Taiwan, which also saw a daily record increase in the number of new cases, reported 27 additional infections on Friday—most of which are travel-related. In Singapore, 24 out of 32 newly infected patients had a history of travel to Southeast Asia, Europe and North America.

All three places managed to fend off the first wave of the coronavirus outbreak, when it was spreading across mainland China—despite having close economic ties and a large number of travelers from the mainland.

The new wave is crashing across the region as the number of officially reported new cases in the mainland has dropped to just a handful. On Thursday, Chinese officials reported zero new domestic coronavirus infections.

In Hong Kong, 36 of the 48 COVID-19 cases reported Friday had overseas travel records, Dr. Chuang Shuk-kwan, head of the communicable disease branch of Hong Kong’s Centre for Health Protection, said during an afternoon press conference. The cases involve travel to over a dozen countries, including Singapore, the Philippines, Austria, Portugal, United Kingdom, Canada and the United States. The newly confirmed cases brings the total in Hong Kong to 256.

with Richard Engel and he said Singapore had it contained. This is how we will see it playing out. This is our future. I thought we needed a total US shutdown, test every single person and do contact tracking. If people are moving and traveling globally and countries are not in 100% lock down the recurring waves will continue until there is a vaccine I am afraid. This is not ending until everyone is infected and has immunity (which may last a full year). Those who are infected and recovered will be needed to pick up the slack in the work force.

It's not expected to go to zero for s long time

Unrestricted test and isolate procedures keep the city relatively safe, we don't have that here.

Orange County, California has about 4 million people, but went into strict lockdown a week ago when it had only 17 confirmed cases of community spread Covid-19.

It is devastating the local economy. We are flying blind without adequate testing, so we have to assume everyone has Covid-19.

Same with LA County. They've given up:

Los Angeles County health officials advised doctors to give up on testing patients in the hope of containing the coronavirus outbreak, instructing them to test patients only if a positive result could change how they would be treated.

Without test then we're sheltering in place with sick people seeing half of the infected don't show symptoms.

If he had accepted them, we'd have enough tests and we would not be destroying our economy right now with indescriminate lockdowns.

We are so f*ck*d.

Some stoic part of me believes this Trumpian madness will come to an end. It won’t be wrapped up neatly with a bow. No. That won’t do. It will be shut tight with a padlock and sealed over with concrete. And perhaps in the passing of time we’ll manage to convince ourselves that it never happened. Right. The practical part of me knows that is a luxurious pipe dream that is no longer possible. It must end now.

It must end now because this narcissistic cult of willful ignorance, overt racism and gleeful cruelty is killing us all. That includes the cult, but they are too beguiled (a generous descriptor on my part) to appreciate or even conceive that they play a role in their own demise by following their orange piper. Some might say that’s the silver lining to this very real pandemic. Sadly, the Covid-19 virus doesn’t care about our race, sexual preference, ideology or anything other than a host is a host is a host. I’m sorry, but their demise is not a fair trade off. Their flagrant disregard of all guidelines that slow the inevitable infection hurts the rest of us more than letting them die of “stupid.” I remain practical to a fault.

This is all about time. Flattening the curve. Delaying the infection. Waiting 12-18 months for a safe and tested vaccine. That’s AS IF most of us can afford to hold out 12-18 months before too, too many of us have unnecessarily succumbed to this plague because of “stupid.” There I go again.

Stupid is as stupid does. It must end NOW.
