Why are we still calling this a "stimulus" package? THERE IS NO ECONOMY!

We need to worry about people having enough money to afford food, health care, and housing for the next 3 months (at least).

NO ONE is going to casinos or on cruises or taking happy flights.

Can we get the money TO THE people so we can survive?

I and a bunch of others were furloughed from our jobs in an entertainment industry Friday. I have NO confidence that IF the company got money I would see any of it. NO ONE is going to Broadway shows or concerts, either.

Yeesh.

If you can't work from home, lots of factories are still up and running.

Farmers are farming.

If you can work from home, you're working from home. I teach class tomorrow.

Friday I went to the store. I saw a store with stuff in it, people selling it, people buying it.

While the road wasn't exactly packed at 10 a.m. there was reasonable traffic. I'm usually at work at 10 a.m., so I can't tell if it was all that might lighter than usual.

But Friday my county had a "no dining in restaurants," but still the restaurants I drove past had anywhere from 1 to 20 cars parked in front of it. You go in, you order your food, you pick it up and take it out. Nobody said you had to order your food ahead of time. And the drive-up windows are doing fine.

Some jobs are slammed hard. Some, not so much. It's the mid-range places that are doing the best because they're no so big that there's a decent chance of somebody there being ill, and not so small that there's a shortage of people willing to come in after hours are cut.

I'm in Harris County (non-Houston), Tx. The confirmed case number here is low, and we've had one death (and that a week ago). If the death rate is 1%, that's about right. It's still within reason if the death rate is 2-4%. But if we have 1000 undiagnosed cases and have for 10+ days, you'd expect to see at least 20 people dead from this, and that just hasn't happened. So we're keeping social distance, but most places are still going on.

If this wasn't the case, there'd be no reason for money given out to the unemployed. In a couple of weeks there'd be no food to buy, but that wouldn't be the real problem--we'd see water and electricity service discontinued by mid-week. You'd never see this post because there'd be no Internet, even if you still had electricity.

Spreading this level of doom and gloom is totally unproductive and foolish
