(7,808 posts)A virus lives and reproduces by invading a host cell. It uses the cell's food stores for energy. It uses the cell's reproductive molecules (DNA & RNA) to reproduce itself. It creates several copies of itself, killing the host cell in the process. Then several more viruses break out of the dead host cell and proceed to continue the process.
A virus is not like a bacterium in that it is not a separate creature that causes illness as a side job or hobby. There is scientific debate over whether a virus is technically alive.

(95,244 posts)A virus manages to get into a living cell, and when it does, uses the cell to replicate itself, repeatedly, till the cell dies and the newly minted viruses are released to find fresh cells to enter and repeat the process. Strictly speaking, a virus is not 'alive', it is simply a bit of genetic code out in the wild.

(761 posts)Would ventilating on oxygen be a prophylactic or curable solution? Also I see ventilators mentioned a lot. Would those portable battery powered oxygen generators provide any relief. What about oxygen bottles available at welding supply stores? I worked in coal mines for 10 years and to mitigate conditions I what breathe from the oxygen bottle from the welding cart. Dont know if it was beneficial but it didnt kill me and it made me think I was helping my lungs.
