Funny you bring this up.
A few weeks ago, I subbed 8th grade science and they were learning about viruses.
I told every class about this. I asked what to you call it when a YouTube video suddenly is watched by millions. They all knew "viral". Told them that it's called that because that's what viruses do. Spread super fast.
They seemed to get it.
