(15,074 posts)He's a "self certified" ophthalmologist. Whatever the hell that means.
(Conversation with self: "Gee, I think I'd like to be an eye doctor." "Well, OK then. How about I certify myself and we hang out a shingle. What could possibly go wrong?" "I know! We might be elected to the senate where we can really destroy people's lives!" "Cool." "Cool."

(53,061 posts)He tried to set up an alternative group for recertification but it failed.

(26,255 posts)The back story is, he got board certed in 1995, I think. Back in 1991 or 2 they ended the lifetime certifications but 'grandfathered' in anyone who was certified, at that time. I think all of the ABMS boards did that. Apparently that got up Rand's nose so he formed his own board, The National Board of Ophthalmology. His wife and father in law were on the boards and they had a TAKE HOME CERTIFICATION EXAM!?!? Never had that many people apply and it all disappeared right around 2000.
In this day and age, he'd have a hard time finding insurance companies and hospitals to credential him because most now require board certification. We had one other option that had to do with letters of recommendation from peers.

(26,255 posts)At one time, many medical specialty board certifications were lifetime. Then in the early 90's, the ABMS (American Board of Medical Specialties) instituted a 10 year re-certification rule. Anyone certified before that date was 'grandfathered' in as lifetime. Everyone else has to re-apply. He became board certified a few years after that happened and got his y-fronts in a twist about those who were allowed to maintain the lifetime certification. So, he started his own board. It never really went anywhere. Nobody accepted it as a true board certification.
Disclaimer: my old job was credentialing and re-credentialing physicians. In our plan, and with many others, board eligibility was tracked and eventual certification was pretty much mandatory. Part of my process was to track training dates and contact non-board certified physicians who were up for re-credentialing (done every 3 years) to follow up on whether they were registered to take their boards.
keithbvadu2
(36,722 posts)So, is he currently 'board' certified?
Siwsan
(26,255 posts)His board would have lapsed when he opted to form his own, rather than to re-certify with the American Board of Ophthalmology.
He probably held on to his medical license, though.

(9,234 posts)(that I've heard of). Right now they're thinking this isn't that serious. They're in the 80% that are mild or asymptomatic. If someone were to be hospitalized or die from this, especially someone under 60, I think we would see a different attitude from them.
