Nigeria Has Chloroquine Poisonings After Trump Praised Drug

Nigeria reported two cases of chloroquine poisoning after U.S. President Donald Trump praised the anti-malaria drug as a treatment for the novel coronavirus.

Health officials are warning Nigerians against self-medicating after demand for the drug surged in Lagos, a city that’s home to 20 million people. Two people were hospitalized in Lagos for chloroquine overdoses, Oreoluwa Finnih, senior health assistant to the governor of Lagos, said in an interview.


“Please don’t panic,” she said via text message. “Chloroquine is still in a testing phase in combination with other medication and not yet verified as a preventive treatment or curative option.”

But so does tylenol and alcohol.

Dose is usually expressed in base chloroquine vs phosphate or sulfate. 500 mg phospate = 300 mg base

Standard dose is 900 mg (base) over 24 hours, then 300 mg over the next 48.

One time dose of 3000 mg can be fatal. Doses over 4000 mg are almost always fatal. Doses 2000 mg and under are okay per the literature. Different in children where even 1000 mg can be fatal.

Has a complicated clearance. Plasma levels build up quickly then drop off rapidly with a 2 to 6 hour halflife. Absorbed across all body tissues.

Next phase is slower, with a half life of 6 days or longer depending on dose.

Final phase for terminal clearance has a half life of 20 to 55 days.

Its a strange drug.

He is rambling like somebody losing touch with reality. He says anything that crosses his mind. He should be able to be silenced for spreading medical information. People in high positions are measured against a higher standard because their position implies knowledge and authority.
