At least that seems to be the reasoning of these idiots, like the lieutenant governor of Texas:
https://www.democraticunderground.com/100213161747
They -- and this group apparently includes Trump -- seem to feel that ordering everyone back to work will just mean that some older people will die, and some younger ones will "go through the process" (as Trump put it) and then be fine, and the economy will get back to the economic bubble Trump loves to brag about.
They seem to feel those old people will just quietly wink out of existence.
No medical bills. No overrun hospitals. No funeral costs.
No economic losses from the many seniors who are still working no longer being there.
No economic losses from the many seniors who offer free caregiving, whether for older relatives or spouses or children or grandchildren, suddenly being gone.
No economic losses from all the volunteer work so many of them do.
And no economic losses, either, from the many younger people who may require hospitalization, or may be unable to work for long periods of time.
This is not just a brutal, Darwinian calculation the $-obseesed are making, it's a monumentally stupid one just on economic terms alone.

But if we screw it up and blow through hospital capacity, there will be many, many needless additional deaths, not just due to covid-19, but also due to hospitals not being able to address unrelated problems.
Those unrelated problems won't just be old people. They will include 45-year olds having a first heart attack, teenagers with trauma from car accidents, children with appendicitis, etc.
