I had heard of that.

Folks down here sometimes call it "Awful House", but I've never got less than a satisfactory meal at a fair price, with friendly service from any of them I've been to.

Sure, it's terrible for you but that's the experience you want. And since locally owned, individually distinctive diners can be harder to find, Waffle House fits the bill.

After Hurricane Hermione hit Tallahassee, the only place that had hot food was a Waffle House. They had no electricity, so it was cash only, but their gas grill was working. The menu was limited - hamburgers or grilled cheese. Period.

We had stuff at the house, but no power to cook with so we took a friend who was in worse shape for dealing with it. We all got a hot meal, such as it was, and felt better.

The previous year after a tropical storm hit, the Waffle House food truck was in town and served a lot of food the day after the storm, but it only took one day for the rest of the Waffle Houses to get back up and running.

In hurricanes. They literally never close. I remember when Charlie hit here in 04 some of them did not even know where the keys to lock the doors were located.

And love me some pecan waffles!
