Low-income Americans on Social Security do not need to file a tax return. As long as they received a SSA-1099 form (the Social Security benefit statement), the federal government will be able to send them a payment via the usual way they get their Social Security payment. Retirees and people on disability are both eligible for the special payment.

(2,747 posts)Payment. Funny that the Republicans were not worried about this windfall. Of course they think most retirees are their voters.

(586 posts)I'm on SS & don't really need the money since I already have most of my expenses paid within my budget. I was thinking of sending it (or part of it) to the Biden campaign!

(586 posts)with republicans you never know what kind of pain they're trying to cook up for us! I have some set aside so I might add some of this money to that.
I think I will do the same. I was just talking to my husband about how we have been lucky and haven't taken a financial hit, although it did hit both of our children. We are already helping our son, but we could still share some of this windfall for a very worthy cause.

(14,489 posts)Many of us on SS will wind up having to help out the younger ones in our circles of family and friends that are out of work and saddled with debt.
That's what us old farts are for, right?..........

(15,805 posts)The whole purpose of giving everyone money is to keep us all spending, and keep as much that money circulating to shore up the economy and avoid a Recession. The money you spend buying groceries, gas, ordering a toy for the goodest pup, or just pay some bills, keeps other people employed so they too, can spend their money to buy more stuff, that in turn keeps other people... etc., and so on.
Those who just stuff the money back into the bank are contributing to slowing down the economy and that pushes us toward the brink of another Great Recession. If you must save some of that windfall money, split it and at least put something back into play to boost your local communities

(14,489 posts)Most of us older ones have tried to save a little at a time each month for emergencies such as a replacement roof or car trouble. So, I'll likely have to deal with a leaky roof just to help my daughter to get by. There's not enough for both and still pay the bills for my son and I.
So no, there won't be any saving going on around here. My little partial roof nest egg has become a family emergency fund.
In other news, thousands of charities around the globe will soon become extremely desperate. If I have a few bucks extra, it will go to them. Democratic Party election campaigns are going to be starving as well.

(19,193 posts)Senior citizens live within their means. We'll actually pay our bills on time during this crisis, because being on a fixed income means we're guaranteed our income, no matter how meager for some, because it comes directly from Medicare, pensions, and savings or investments.
The money, for me, is what I like to call "found money". It's money I never planned on having, and really don't need in order to survive. So donating the money to 'Biden for President' won't hurt me financially in any way. Some will say that's wasting governmental money, and I should return it, or refuse to take it. Maybe I should donate the money to local food banks, or to other non-profits to ease the suffering of others. All of these people are correct. I should use the money for those purposes. However, when I can use the money to defeat the worst president EVER, a president who is letting people die NEEDLESSLY so it won't effect his polling numbers for re-election, FUCK THAT!
So any "found money" that comes my way will go directly to Joe Biden so we can defeat the sadistic, ego-maniacal, ignorant son-of-a-bitch in the White House. My mind is made up.
I was just thinking, who wants to become president so that he can kill people in their own country? Because that's what he seems to be doing!
Donating to Biden is an investment for the future, if there still is a future if we ever get out of this mess!!

(6,900 posts)but not being able to buy handsoap, toilet paper, paper towels, or hand samitizer in any nearby store or online is a bigger problem here right now.
Having doctor visits postponed multiple time is a bigger problem here right now.
Having to spend time in crowded supermarkets to find necessities is a bigger problem here right now.
Knowing that the nearest hospitals will soon have no space left and that the shortage of PPE for the hospital workers will cause hundreds of unnecessary deaths is a bigger problem here right now.
One NYC hospital lost more people to coronavirus (13) yesterday than the US military lost in Afghananistan this year.
That incompetent narcissist has to go and go now or many more people will die.

(32,671 posts)a fixed income is really great, so far. Everything I have is paid for. Unlike my neighbors that are working, I don't have to worry about paying the rent or a car note. I can survive on SS and a small pension, I've been doing it for some time now.
With all of the crap going on, I get to worry about that.

(19,193 posts)is that everyone who has responded here will, in all likelihood, die from the COVID-19 virus before there is a vaccine formulated and distributed throughout the country. That will take at least 12 to 18 months. This virus is not going away. Think about that my friends.

(61,588 posts)Yes, many people will die of the Coronavirus, but that's a long, long way from saying that every retired person will die.
There are no models that suggest such an outcome from this disease.
Are you ok? Do you have folks you can talk with during this time?

(19,193 posts)When I wake up and read the early morning news I get a little hinky. Knowing what Trump and his republican cronies have in store for us is quite nerve-wracking. If they get their way there won't be any help coming from the federal government. That means we're at the mercy of waiting for a vaccine. That could be up to 2 years away. I honestly don't think we can avoid this virus for that long. As careful as we may be, all it takes is one mistake, one spot we miss disinfecting. Lights out. We'll see I guess.
yardwork
(61,588 posts)I agree that we're all going to get this new virus sooner or later, until a vaccine is developed.
But many older people are surviving the virus with few complications. It's not clear why some people react so strongly when most don't.
This is a very unsettling and nerve wracking time. Please try to see joy and goodness and try not to worry. You are very likely to come through this ok.

(11,885 posts)Knowing some that barely survive before this happened, but the people will need a lot more than that, and deserve it from trumps incompetence, and from him continuously terrorizing us all . It's. Much too little they're soon realize, and more will have to be sent out unless they want a depression. Trump with mnuchin's help is stiffing the American people, and watch how munchin and trump get kickbacks by way of demanding campaign contributions in exchange for their bailout packages, which trump funnels to his own pockets.

(64,995 posts)...we're not getting anything. I saw a limit of $75k. Probably per person, that wasn't clear.
Not complaining. We clearly don't need it.
My one complaint is Boeing gets $16 billion for running the company badly, and we get nothing for being successful & thrifty. So they get rewarded for foolishly managing their cash & investments, and we are left out (again, that's OK from a $ POV) because we managed finances well.
If we don't get any, neither should Boeing.

(13,964 posts)they should have just gone ahead and cut a check to everyone, regardless of income. It would be easier that way, less red tape I would think.

(64,995 posts)...streamlined is unlikely an option. This thing is still 75% of the atrocity that Mitch & The Mobsters came up with while asking no Democrats their opinion.

(91 posts)some of us retirees are not doing so well. I barely get by, and the cost of food, housing, utilities are all climbing. This year, for example, I got a cost of living increase on SS benefits that came out to $14, while my utilities went up %6, trash-water-sewer costs went up %6, and I know I'm paying more for food. The remainder of that cost of living increase will buy me a cup of coffee each month for the rest of the year. Wow! And, due to this crisis, I've had to spend almost double what I had budgeted for food, just to keep from going to the store more often. Last year was about the same, but w/o the virus problem... and that year, I got a $28 increase. Next year, who knows. So, yeah, I'm holding on to the money to make ends meet, for I have a feeling that next year, that $7 cost of living increase won't even buy me a cup of coffee.

But, yeah, not planning on blowing all of it at once.
