And national leadership hasn't exactly been on the ball about limiting spread.

It's not some countries where the future is known but the past is hard to predict.

The death toll for that many cases wasn't so bad. There's some factors to be considered there, lessons to be learned, but I suspect that most of the factors won't be dealt with very well. Nobody's going to have stacks of ventilators and unused ICU beds sitting there; universal health care still has a budget, and if you do invest in the stuff you have to keep investing in the stuff. After 20 years, unused, most won't be useable.

People seem to be a bit too eager to say how bad it is.

They could use some virtue signaling instead of showing that particular eagerness.
