CBS poll: America was unprepared, efforts to stop virus 'going badly'

Two-thirds of Americans believe the country was "unprepared to deal with this outbreak" as the coronavirus pandemic crossed oceans and began to sweep the country from Washington state to New York to Louisiana, according to a CBS News/YouGov national poll.

The survey found that 57% of Americans believe efforts to limit spread of the virus are "going badly," with 25% saying it is going "very badly." Just 23% believe the country will emerge from crisis over the next few weeks.

President Donald Trump is trusted to a point in the poll. Fifty-three percent of those surveyed approve of the job his administration is doing to combat the coronavirus.

But Americans, unlike the 45th president, trust the experts. Eighty-eight percent told the pollster they trust health care professionals, 82% voicing confidence in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The nation's governors -- in the front lines of efforts to stop the pandemic -- get strong 66% approval, unheard of for political leaders in this time.

Forty-four percent said they trust what Trump is saying, the figure as high as it is because 90% of Republicans surveyed trust Trump. The news media is virtually tied with Trump with a trust level of 43%, rock bottom among Republicans. The nation's divisions extend to the pandemic.

is STAGGERINGLY bad. AFAIK, in times of a major crisis, the US President has near unanimous approval, at least early on. W was probably an exception with Hurricane Katrina. I would bet his early polling, prior to the widespread understanding of how badly he and his administration bungled almost every aspect of the crisis was probably much higher than 53%.

Trump has destroyed himself with his own public words, all of which have been memorialized.

43 was at 90% before the US went to Afghanistan.
He was still something like 75 when he invaded the wrong country over 9/11.
55%, which is likely a function of question framing, is really low.

He has bungled this so badly, there is ALMOST no way out.

However, he will do everything within (and outside of) his power to win re-election, as several people, including himself will immediately be the target of massive criminal investigations with Joe Biden becomes President in 2021. Expect him to engage in massive lying (obviously) and to use this crisis to spin himself as the hero (already being done). I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't get much worse from there so that Nixon's 1972 campaign will be a paragon virtue vis-a-vis Trump 2020.

At this point, many Americans consider him a success when he doesn't shut down the government or threaten nuclear war on twitter.

Didn't cbs combine % to get that 53%?. That poll seems to contradict itself. Majority of Americans blame trump for the crisis, and majority of Americans don't trust trump.

a man i've worked with for years, is a great guy. He a PhD, a chemist. He basically tried to sell me the fox/trump line that the economy needs to get rolling, like now.

that is not only deadly, but shortsighted. turn the virus loose right now and people will be dropping right and left. the economy won't get better. how can he not see that?!

last week he tried to sell me that China is responsible for what's happening in the US. blinded by fox.

the only good thing is that we can argue about these things and remain civil. I can't do that with my own brother and sister. but even with him I feel my words fall on deaf ears even as it's clear he cannot make an argument in return that makes sense.

He will lose the Presidency
He will lose some of his wealth.
He may end up loosing his wife..
He has already lost respect of all Democrats (what little he had)
He will lose much respect from Republicans..(those who will admit it)
He has lost respect of experts on disease
He has lost respect of business experts
etc, etc, etc, etc, etc,
