covidtracking.com -- a GREAT site for testing data, cases, etc., and historical summaries

Last edited Fri Mar 27, 2020, 01:53 PM - Edit history (1)

Perhaps this has been posted, but I just discovered the site. It's a project spearheaded by the Atlantic.

It provides great testing numbers -- positive, negative, pending, along with hospitalized, and deaths for each state. It grades the quality of the data, which is wonderful.

It also provides links to numbers over time so you can see the changes, as well as links to best sources of information for each state.

And you can download as a spreadsheet, so you can easily add data, like pop, and calculations. (Wish they included figures per capita, but can't have everything.)

There's more. I'm still exploring.

I wish I had discovered this site sooner!

On edit:
Whoops. Forgot to include the link. Here: https://covidtracking.com/

Terrifying that NY and NJ's rate of positive test results is so high (about 50%). Most states were less than 10% from what I saw (of those with reliable data anyway).

It's postives divided by the total pos+neg, but it's still a lot higher than most other states.

7. Comparing NY and WA

Currently, the positive rate in NY is about 30%

WA and NY have tested about the same number of people per million (NY 6,250 and WA 6,177) so comparing them seems reasonable. See below.

The number of reported deaths in the two states is about the same (20 per million) but the positive rates are very different (30% vs. 7%). Some of that is probably due to higher incidence in NY, but some may be who they are testing (if NY is focused on testing most severe cases, you might expect higher positives).

New York

37,258 Pos
84,846 Neg
Total 122,104
Positive rate: 30%

Population: 19.5 mil

Tested: 6,250 per million

Deaths 385 (20 per million)

Hospitalized 6,844 (350 per million)

---------------
Washington

Positive 3,207
Negative 42,173
Total 46,380
Positive rate: 7%

Population 7.5 million

Tested 6,170 per million

Deaths 147 (20 per million)

Hospitalizations: Not reported
