(25,839 posts)Okay, so maybe I'm only speaking for myself, but an inflated price for Spam doesn't affect me, sort of like an inflated price for diapers likewise doesn't affect me.
Adult diapers, now that's something I might care about.

(2,882 posts)I don't really like spam (other than the Monty Python skit and song) but I went to my small town grocery today
and bought a few extra items (I'm on a low fixed income so I can't really "stock up". Was going to pick up a couple
of cans but it was $5.00 a can which is more than I would pay, they had the "store" brand for $2 so I did buy
a couple and will try some Hawaii type combo with a bit of pineapple. $80, no way...

(36,291 posts)And a few recipes which use such. It's $2.00 a can but the local Dollar General store is out of it.
I'm on a fixed income too (SSDI) and it took me many months to build up a stock that would last my wife and I for about 45 days.

(23,218 posts)But Spam is something that I just can't eat for some reason. To me, it's right up there with pig's feet. Not going to happen.
If I were starving, I'd eat a big box of Saltine crackers and drink a gallon of water before even considering Spam. LOL
As for price gougers, they're in abundance these days.
lagomorph777
(30,613 posts)It IS pig's feet.

Back before the invention of packaged gelatin it was a luxury item, used to both preserve foods and make fancy desserts.
I still don't like Spam - of any kind!

(5,164 posts)You click problem with this item and then enter it as price/ price gouging. I did that for some soap there and it was removed/ no longer available.

(1,076 posts)My husbands store has hundreds of cans of the stuff for their usual price of $2.92. He sent me a picture of one of the pallets of the stuff. Normally, they get only a box of each variety, not a whole pallet. Never mind two.
As I said to him that day: Are there really multiple kinds of Spam, and do people eat that much of it here?
To which he said, Yes, there are multiple varieties, and no on eating that much, but they expect hoarders to take care of that much of the stuff.

(37,993 posts)They're basically marketing offers for some $$$-off coupon if the buyer applies for a credit card or some such nonsense.
Before the quarantine, there were listings like this - basic items selling for sky-high prices that are nothing more than ways to get a buyer's personal info.

Canned meats like Spam were very popular before all homes had refrigerators. If you look at really old ads they cost very few wartime meat ration points.

(34,661 posts)Been on the production floor at the Hormel Plant in Austin Minnesota several times. Always impressed by the Ham trimming and de-boning section. Spam is made up of hams that get messed up on the Trim Tables for the most part. Despite what rumors are, there are no junk cuts of Pork in Spam as some might think. Pure Pork all the way.
BTW,going price last week was $2.64 / can and usually we see 5-6 different flavors as Low Sodium .
