Coronavirus: India 'super spreader' quarantines 40,000 people

Indian authorities in the northern state of Punjab have quarantined around 40,000 residents from 20 villages following a Covid-19 outbreak linked to just one man.

The 70-year-old died of coronavirus - a fact found out only after his death.

The man, a preacher, had ignored advice to self quarantine after returning from a trip to Italy and Germany, officials told BBC Punjabi's Arvind Chhabra.
...
The man, identified as Baldev Singh, had visited a large gathering to celebrate the Sikh festival of Hola Mohalla shortly before he died.

19 of his relatives have tested positive.

A preacher? Why are some of the people with the biggest senses of entitlement in the world preachers?

Anybody that is looked at with some sort of veneration or undue, uncritical respect, who is treated as all-wise and the person to be followed, goes a bit barmy.

Worked in a church office, pastor worked upstairs. One guy walked in for his "counseling" appointment and had a 2 foot length of 2x4. "What's that for?" "It's going to be on the table in front of me. In case I don't think he's telling me straight answers."

Office staff laughed. Other church members present were aghast at the sheer disrespect. They acquired their own sense of self-worth by identifying with somebody superior. It's why they went barmy in the end and I bailed.

I think of old politicians as horse-traders, out to cut the best deal. Maybe for themselves, maybe for their constituents. You could say somebody was a horrible person or even corrupt, but still a good representative and that you'd vote for him again.

I think of a lot of young politicians as preachers.
