I just spent 15 terrifying minutes searching online for "Instant Nonfat Dry Milk"

Just FYI, there isn't any. Not at my local Sams, Safeway, Kroger. Not at AMAZON, or random Google Shop.

I finally found dehydrated milk for sausagemakers. It's the old-style fine powder that we used to buy
at the co-op back in the hippy days. At least I think it is.

Pretty sketchy. But these are cruel times.

What do you think? Did I buy it? (5 pound buckets.) I won't say the price, but it was reasonable.

I sincerely hope they continue to deliver fresh milk on a regular basis. At least that is hard to hoard.

As to dry milk, I'm not surprised. Even before this, I had diffulties finding it. Seems a lot of people don't use it any more. Glad you found some though.

I never used the stuff until recently, but my stepson was visiting and he drinks it like a beverage! By the glass!

home-made yogurt is awesome.

If we live, I foresee us turning to an all plant based diet, by necessity. But hubby works daily in a bread factory (essential business) and he needs his smoothies! Hope the bakery manages to stay open. It's owned by a huge global corporation so they should be fine. They were already overworking everybody in the plant.

Banana, powdered peanut butter, cocoa powder, a date (remove the seed!) plant based milk, a little ice. You could use honey instead of the date. I also assume, though haven’t tried it, you could use regular peanut butter instead of powdered.

You can play with the amounts of each to taste. I use plant based milks in all my smoothies. My current favorite is Oat-ley oat milk. But it comes refrigerated and needs to stay that way. I get it at Whole Foods, Target or Sprouts. I also have boxes of almond milk in the pantry for when I can’t get Oat-ley.

Good luck to you and your husband on the bakery plant staying opened.

I bought some freezer baggies and have frozen some milk in it in small batches. About 5 baggies per gallon. We don't use a lot of milk, but I want to be sure that we'll still have some in case there is a problem. I only froze 2 gallons, so it hardly counts as serious hoarding.

I always had a frozen quart or two in the freezer. There was enough empty space in the quart container. At least in those days.

That lasts for about 3 months on the shelf (unrefrigerated), and probably for a year in the fridge. My mom switched to that years ago, as she lives alone and hardly uses milk. It tastes the same and doesn't go bad before she's gone through a quart.

I always wondered why they still don't sell it in regular grocery stores, but she gets it at the Dollar Store. Walmart has it too (a quick check shows it in stock still), as "shelf-stable milk".

There wasn't any to be found. Back in the 60's we always had Sanalac in the house and my dad made it by the pitcher. I think he was following some sort of Adele Davis advice (his diet guru).

They still make it, and it's really good. Unfortunately, it's sold out on Amazon and nothing in any store we went to including Woodman's, which usually has everything you could want.

I only found it on one of my shopping trips made in the last few weeks. It was pretty expensive, too, I thought, but it's not ever been on my shopping list before. The last powdered milk I had was in the early 1980's, when you could line up for a box of that and some government cheese.

It is an easy way to have milk on hand to bake things like cornbread, whatever requires milk.
Can't figure that out. Must be hoarding, why else would such a simple thing be unavailable?
