I just talked to a Trump voter. They are starting to return from Alice in Wonderland.

He told me Trump fucked up by not testing people. I said to him, that's what happens when you vote for a reality TV host to be president. He shook his head in agreement.

Trump voters ignored reality for years. It is hard to ignore the reality of death, death is as real as it gets and it is in their faces.

"One America News Network, also known as One America News, is a far-right news and opinion channel owned by Herring Networks, Inc., launched on July 4, 2013. The network is headquartered in San Diego, California, and operates news bureaus in Washington, D.C. and New York City."

To stop Fox. The Fairness Doctrine was FCC policy, and the FCC only pertains to bunny-ear “free” TV. Fox is a cable station, which is a private network, and thus exempt.

Where a Fairness Doctrine would make a real difference is with Sinclair bunny ear stations and hate radio. Getting those two traitor propaganda tools reined in would cut back on a sizable percentage of the worst problems.

Sun Mar 29, 2020, 01:53 PM
Mar 2020

The problem with Fox is that they blur the line between news and opinion programming. This is why they could have a relatively competent journalist/anchor like Shep Smith amid their stable of raving opinion loons. The (tiny) news division of Fox can almost be normal, but the opinion shows are cranking out the propaganda. And with opinion, you don’t necessarily have to be 100% accurate.

News or opinion doesn’t matter, legally. If either of them get something wrong, they have an ace in the hole: NYT v Sullivan. This is a Supreme Court decision that says media outlets (and citizens, too) can’t be sued for transmitting inaccurate information, as long as there was no malice aforethought.

Even the best reporters get it wrong sometimes, without meaning any harm, and they deserve protection from lawsuits over libel, slander and defamation when mistakes happen. That’s why NYT v Sullivan exists.

The problem comes when bad actors like Fox take advantage of that principle to distort, but pretend that they meant no harm. They “sincerely” thought the info they had was accurate, to the best of their knowledge (I know, I know, but work with me here).

You and I know they damned well did mean harm by trotting our total bullshit, but try proving that in a court of law. It takes an enormous amount of evidence to show that malice was intended. First of all, you’re not in their heads—and can’t be. Second, that means you have to find evidence though other means to demonstrate an intention to lie to cause harm. And good luck with that. If the defendant (liar) is a reporter and used an anonymous source, then you can’t make a reporter give up that source. Because First Amendment. And that kills any chance of a suit proceeding any further.

It’s a really frustrating situation, especially for public figures—including politicians—in the US, who, because they are public figures, don’t have the privacy rights that the rest of us do in battling a defamation-type suit.

With their small or nonexistent hospitals.

More people will die in the cities because more people.

More of the rural will die, per capita, because poor access to health care, poorer health overall, and they won’t have social isolation in place until it’s too late.

They’ll also think they’re safer from infection because they’re (relatively) isolated. But all it takes is one to get it, and then a whole town or village get it because they are every bit as social as city people.

Lost Springs, Wyoming has only 8 people in the official village, but even they have a bar. Or they did, the last time I was there. Guess where adults from the village and the neighboring ranches are, most evenings?

At that bar.

When it hits rural America, whole villages could become ghost towns.

58. In some ways, they are, but in others not.
Sun Mar 29, 2020, 02:09 PM
Mar 2020

People who live in rural areas don’t socialize the same way. People in cities go out more, 7 days a week, because they have so many things to choose from on every day of the week.

That isn’t the case for rural America.

When I was growing up in the boonies, most people went to the nearby town on Saturday for shopping and entertainment. Sunday was church day, if you were into that. Weekday evenings you were home. The rest of the time you were awake you were working or at school. Or, in the summer, goofing off on the farm when you had no chores.

So, yes, they congregate in the same spaces more, but they go out less often. City people go out more often, but are more likely to congregate in varied spaces.

If that makes sense.

The purple and light red surburbs are the places that decide the election, as long as the margin for Trump is held down reasonably in rural areas.

Churches, restaurants, golf courses in my area are closed down, church services are happening online in some cases. My youngest brother, who is a minister says that people who die are being cremated, their families have no choice in the matter. My area leans Trump, but Hillary got a surprisingly decent number of votes here given that she did absolutely NO campaigning here, or put any other resources in here, Trump actually held a rally in the largest city in the area. It is possible that in areas like mine, Trump will barely win, or even slightly loose if Biden runs a sound campaign, that would have a major impact statewide because Trump needs to run up his margins in places like my area.

There's the contingent of people who are as sadistic as Trump in seeing their perceived American enemies punished. I'm sure those people approve of him because his actions are leading to more sufferings.

An orderly approach to the virus starting weeks ago would have eased some of the pain we are going through now.

Trump is a sociopath. He has no empathy. He only cares about himself. He doesn't care about anyone and that even includes those that still support him.
I don't believe we will even see an election. Trump will use and abuse this crisis to keep himself in power. Martial Law, canceling elections, whatever excuse he can come up with he will use.
I believe millions of Americans will die as a result of his criminal negligence and he won't care in the least. Its not a question of when will he attack Blues states, he already is. (170 broken ventilators to California etc)
Its is my belief that he has to be removed, by force if needed, now. We won't see elections. I'm sure of that.

He failed. There's no question that he failed. The adaptations of our behavior because of Covid-19 are affecting us all.

It's something we have in common. There are those who can not be reached; but there's also a big population of people who will think twice about voting for more of the same for the next four years.

That's the last line I hear each time an interviewer talks to a farmer decimated by Trumps tariff war or doing nothing about the endless flooding in places like Iowa farmland.

along with concepts behind the prosperity gospel and weak government.

Not only are they seeing death first-hand, they're seeing people's health permanently damaged, dreams and fortunes disappear overnight, social bonds broken and neighbors fighting over packs of toilet paper.

Tell him also this is to a large degree the result of ultra right-wing policies of decades of cutting taxes for corporations and the wealthy, and destroying the foundations of good government and leadership (in my recollection) since the days of Nixon.

That and the brainwashing of around 30% of our citizens to believe that's OK.......

Thanks for sharing that bit of good news.

55. Not just "reality tv host". There might be others who'd reaize how out of their depth...

..they were and make better use of the professionals.

No, this particular reality tv host was also the world's most obvious con man, with a lifetime of self-centeredness, shady practices, and a long, long track record of breaching contracts and stiffing "the little guy" as soon as he had what he wanted. Any home contractor/plumber/cabinetmaker/freelancer/etc. knows the type: everything is fine until it's time for him to write the final check. Then suddenly he's "not satisfied" and magically discovers a laundry-list of nit-picks.

Ignoring all that was above and beyond "vote[ing] for a reality TV host". I can't even.

does not represent the mass of Trumpettes. You will know that the failures are being recognized when Trump's approval ratings drop into the mid 30% range.

to regret your vote. Those voters share the responsibility of those deaths. The ONLY thing these people can do to show they are REALLY sorry is to ACTUALLY vote, NOT vote for trump, and NOT vote for a third party.

He'll try but it won't work.

I'm sure they're trying to cook the books on how many have the virus and how many are dying from it. But it is so out of control, even the book cookers are getting it.

Couldn't happen to a worse prick.

I hope he gets the virus. That would be Karma.

Now he is destroying their white asses they are starting to come around? Fuck em.

We just found out that our daughter, a Family Medicine Professor will be taking her turn with other doctors caring for COVID19 patients. Mama is not happy! If she dies I will hold republicans responsible! I am proud of her! But perhaps her risks are not necessary! May God protect her!

There are several red hatters among my former high school classmates, some of whom I follow on Facebook. All of them, without exception, are convinced that Trump is showing strong leadership and that any criticism of the president comes from hatred.

They're also completely enraged at Nancy Pelosi for having (in their eyes) delayed the stimulus bill for political purposes.
