( Its real but reads like something out of a Stephen King novel. )
Gov. Gina Raimondo is demanding a two-week self-quarantine for travelers from New York state, the U.S. disease epicenter.
By Mary Papenfuss
Rhode Island state police backed up by the National Guard launched house-to-house searches Saturday to flush out New Yorkers who have traveled to the state seeking refuge from the coronavirus crisis. Theyre being ordered to self-quarantine for two weeks.
Police on Friday also pulled over cars with New York license plates to give drivers the same orders. Cars traveling over the border encountered law enforcement authorities and signs ordering New York drivers to pull over to a checkpoint for questioning.
National Guard members have also been posted at Rhode Islands airport, train stations and bus stops to grill travelers. The penalty for not complying with the states quarantine order is a fine of up to $500 and 90 days in prison.
Thats a law thats an order, Democratic Gov. Gina Raimondo said Friday of the new quarantine requirements, which she conceded Saturday were fairly extreme.
It comes with penalties. Its not a suggestion, she added.

(1,586 posts)Even current Rhode Island residents. I am currently in Mass staying at my boyfriends house. If I go home I am required to quarantine for 14 days. I am completely okay with that and welcome the police or our National guard to check in on me. I am fine with this because I care about the health and well being of my family, friends and neighbors.
The Governor has done a great job dealing with this pandemic.

(14,250 posts)You can go to your vacation home, just stay put for 14 days and watch for symptoms. If you are coming from NYC, you would have to do that anyway.
It's not like Dare county, NC, which is turning back cars for visitors and non-resident property owners. Many people own vacation homes on the outer banks and would normally spend a few weeks there opening up the houses and getting them ready for the season. They can't.
So don't get so upset.

(14,250 posts)I live in MA and hear a lot of griping. While the gov's actions are aimed at new yorkers, towns are targeting all visitors and non-residents, not just new yorkers.
Even people from MA and CT are affected at the town level.

(25,183 posts)for some of my adult life, I'm aware of the tension between rural folks and city people. Seems that it's playing out during this crisis in ways that simply would have been masked in better circumstances.

(8,361 posts)Many of which were waged by the USA. That this governor senses she can't rely on people to do the right thing is because she understands frailty-vulnerability, selfishness, stupidity, that can surface under fire.
