Tribe That Drew Trump's Fire Over Casino Plan Loses Its Reservation Status

The U.S. Interior Department is rescinding the reservation status of a Native American tribe whose plan to build a casino on its Massachusetts land was attacked by President Donald Trump last year.

The planned gaming operation would have competed for business with nearby Rhode Island casinos with strong ties to Trump, who once owned, then bankrupted, casinos in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

The federal Bureau of Indian Affairs informed the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe on Friday that its 321-acre Cape Cod reservation will be “disestablished” and its land taken out of federal trust, according to Tribal Chairman Cedric Cromwell. Land in trust to the federal government effectively grants a tribe special legal status and autonomy. The Mashpee Wampanoag, however, will still be officially recognized by the federal government as a Native American tribe, according to a spokesman for the Interior Department.

Tribal members are believed to be descendants of the first Native Americans to encounter the Pilgrims nearly four centuries ago. They call themselves the “People of the First Light.”

Anything he does can be undone by Biden.

Just like he has done to Obama.

An Indian tribe's reservation status should not be a tool for political reprisal.

edit for grammar

...for a $1B casino resort?

Uh-huh.

The land claim was political bullshit in the first place, which is why the COURTS reversed it.

but, if they lose out on the casino opportunity in the meantime, it could cause them permanent financial harm.

The tribal leaders are putting out half-true bullshit.

Biden cannot reverse the First Circuit Court of Appeals which ORDERED the BIA not to recognize the claim last month.

They started this $1B casino project back in 2016, and it’s been in litigation since that time.

You think someone needs a casino resort anytime soon?

You are being lied to. This is a story with no good guys. Corrupt tribal leadership is fronting for a Malaysian casino developer, and upset neighbors are fronting for competing casino interests.

In the meantime, NOBODY in Massachusetts needs A casino development.

The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe on Thursday was dealt another major setback in its effort to build a casino in Taunton, losing a federal appeals court case it hoped would remove a crucial barrier to the long-stalled project.

The tribe had asked the US Court of Appeals for the First Circuit to overturn a lower court decision that said the federal government had improperly allowed the Mashpee to hold land in trust. That designation is required in order to build a tribal casino.

But less than a month after a three-judge panel heard oral arguments in the case, the court ruled in favor of a group of nearby residents that has been opposing the casino with the help of a company trying to build a state-licensed casino in nearby Brockton.

The American people (with their Russian counterparts) that voted for Trump had to have known that the Presidency was all about him getting his way. As one of his people said, when the Americans that voted for Trump voted for him, they knew what they were getting.

The majority of us that voted against him, we are just along for the ride.

As Adam S. Said, when given a choice - Trump will always choose his own interest over the interest of the Nation. And now, right after being ‘not removed’ by the GOP Senate after withholding money from Ukraine in their fight with Russia - for his political benefit, we have the Coronavirus infestation. His desire to keep the numbers down, not accept test kits from the WHO - all about him, all about Trump.

Just read somewhere that between 100-200,000 U.S. citizens will die as a result of this Coronavirus, but as always, it is all about him. We are just along for the ride.

People are being led by paternal “noble savage” nonsense to buy into a load of bullshit here.

The “tribal land claim” is a front for a Malaysian casino billionaire who used Jack Abramoff to buy off the leadership some time ago.

The BIA recognized the claim a few years ago, but neighbors brought suit to stop a $1B casino resort development that was planned.

LAST MONTH the federal appeals court ruled against the tribe and said the BIA could not recognize that claim. The BIA is simply obeying the court order.

The two leaders are also accused attempting to expel council members who have criticized Cromwell’s handing of finances and his alleged secrecy around casino-related expenditure. In January, Cromwell was temporarily stripped of his financial responsibilities towards the tribe’s affairs after it emerged during his divorce proceedings that he owed $36,901 in unpaid federal taxes.

That period of the tribe’s history was tainted by the legacy of its former chairman Glenn Marshall, who in 2009 was sentenced to 3½ years in federal prison for embezzling nearly $400,000 from the tribe to pay his own bills, making illegal campaign contributions, filing false tax returns and fraudulently receiving Social Security benefits while holding a full-time job. Pombo was unseated in November 2006 amid questions about his ties to Jack Abramoff, a notorious lobbyist who spent several years behind bars in connection with a wide-reaching federal corruption probe.

The First Circuit Court of Appeals, which issued the decision last month requiring the BIA to withdraw recognition of the claim that they were using to build a casino resort backed by a foreign billionaire who bought the tribe, is not "Nero".

The whole last 3 weeks seems like a Nero decree.
I still would like a financial reporter do some research on who on Wall Street started the selloff & who were the bargain hunters that pushed it back up 2k.
Extrinsic insider trading? To coin a phrase.
I'm off topic here, but it wasn't just that.
I posted first before I read all your detail about the courts. And the Abramoff connection does smell bad.
