It might be stupid. Maybe not.
I have seen the posts and pictures of masks being made at home to help out. Masks made out of cloth and perhaps a coffee filter in between layers to hopefully aid in filtration.
Many of you motorheads out there have heard of or used K&N air filters. They use a filter media to hold fine droplets of oil in suspension and it is the oil that does the filtering. This oil is sprayed on by the end user. Not saturated, just a light even coat and then wait for a few minutes while it disperses.
I have a well worn 3M 8511 N95, and I have a fresh can of Kirkland spray canola oil...

(768 posts)If you are serious, I think the oil would clog the N95 mask filter. I am pretty sure the particles the N95 mask filters are much smaller that what is needed for automotive filtering. The oil would likely do a number on the filter pores and may also degrade the filter material.

(2,334 posts)we have been isolated for 30 days now. Not going anywhere so I don't really need the mask and if I do need a mask I do welding so I have a P100. I will report back later. Building fence right now. Doing it while its not raining. Fun.

I also keep bottles of hydrogen peroxide with a sprayer added in my car and kitchen.
My research tells me that HEPA filters are finer than N95 masks, and hydrogen peroxide kills flu virus.
