Because Red States Aren't Shutting Down And Telling Their Citizens To Self-Isolate At Home....

when they do finally get the message and begin to take the precautions - they essentially are going to extend the time the whole country has to stay home. They are not participating in flattening the curve and this will force the apex to peak later thereby extending the spread.

They will also will shoulder the blame for the economy not recovering sooner as it could if the whole country was under stay at home orders.

I don't think Trump has thought this through and the longer this extends this crisis his poll numbers will sink down. He won't be able to campaign. The economy will drag him down. It will be these Red States that will ultimately bring him down.

He is incapable of thinking anything through.

He only reacts to what is right in front of him and his reaction is always to try to make himself look good at the moment.
There is no thinking of anything except "What would impress my cult members? I'll say that."

No matter what is thrown at him, he will deny it, accuse the person who is behind it of doing the thing instead of him, and then blame someone else.
And IT ALWAYS WORKS. it takes the heat off him and lets him react the same way to the next crisis.

This one is harder though. His tricks don't work very will against a virus nature has thrown at him.
I hope it crashes onto the whole maniacal right wing cult of hate and stupidity and burns them to the ground.

The more we adhere to the precautions now, the shorter the duration of this isolation phase will be. As long as people continue to ignore social distancing and spread the virus, the longer we will have to stay sheltered. This should be very simple, but as usual, right-wingers are extremely dense and can't really grasp this concept.

The more people stay in, the less the chance of the disease spreading throughout society, the shorter the severity of the pandemic.

Yes, there is still a time sacrifice, but the chances of having a long, drawn out full blown crisis like they are in Italy become lessened.

Shut the fucking country down down for 6-10 weeks, test everyone and do contact tracing. That is what we ALL must do, not just certain states. Starting with declaration of emergency within 24 hours of the first case in the state, and orders to shut down higher education the next day, followed rapidly by shutting down elementary and secondary schools, entertainment venues, gatherings of more than 50, restaurants, and a stay at home order.

Let's take political generalizations out of this and focus on pointing out states or leaders who are doing a good job, and holding specific leaders accountable - regardless of party affiliation. There are both Republicans who are leading the way, and Democrats who are lagging. If we fail to do that, we're doing just what the Republicans accuse us of doing: politicizing the pandemic rather than working together to get to the other side of it with as few lives destroyed as possible.

I'm not sure what they expect to accomplish from a "making Ohio safer" standpoint - since all that will do is make Trump mad, and then we will be in Trump's doghouse. There's no reason to pick that fight.

(Not that it should be a fight anywhere - but it is far better just to do the right thing and - like your mother always said - if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. That obviously does not apply to places like Michigan or New York - but in places where saying something negative would hurt the residents of the state . . . )

Tue Mar 31, 2020, 07:07 PM

A higher than usual essential services community than most.

That’s what happens when a county has multiple military bases and sub-stations. Plus being the regional mail processor for 780-782 zip codes. Plus being a large city that’s a county seat. Plus being home to a massive regional health care system. Plus being the corporate headquarters for the region’s primary grocery chain. And then all the support personnel necessary for them—cops, firefighters, utilities, etc.

All of that means we have a higher concentration of essential workers per capita than most places. And they all have to go to work.

When you get away from the freeways, though, even some of the busiest streets are quiet. I live off one of those, and it’s been more like it was when I first moved here. It’s been refreshing to get my husband to work without the headaches of recent years.

Hoping to kill off people in our cities and blue states early. Mayors and governors who actually care about their people had to act locally to thwart that plan.

Freepers constantly justify authoritarian and openly racist measures as being worth it if it saves just one life. Sacrifices must be made. Pro-life. Think of the children. etc. And that turned out to be complete BS as they want to wipe out our elderly and vulnerable so they can get back to reaping sweet stock market profits from their comfy homes.

Our homeless don't have homes to quarantine and it's impossible to social distance in overcrowded shelters. They're going to get it hard because of Trump's slow action.

And the rural areas won't be spared. Rural people visit each other, go to churches and schools, Trump rallies, sporting events, and so much more. Don't think for a second that people with country houses and forests or farmland in between are social distancing. Even if we eventually beat this virus in our cities, it will continue longer in the country.

49. Red state communities are shutting down more than you may realize.
Mon Mar 30, 2020, 12:20 PM
Mar 2020

Our community is not all that large but we are taking steps. The city council has passed an ordinance closing all schools and closing daycare for all but children of first responders and other emergency services. No more than two may gather on city owned property (sidewalks, bike trail and the like) and no public gatherings of larger than ten people--yes that means churches too, no on site alcohol sales, take out dining only with employees required to have their temperatures taken and tracked. The only businesses open to the public are pharmacies and grocery stores, all required to allow for social distancing. City Hall and the Police Department are drive up window only; misdemeanors are handled with non-custodial arrests. There is a curfew from 9pm to 6am.

Everyone in the country is dealing with having a feckless idiot in charge and that lack of leadership puts us all on the back foot, but ours is not the only community in the state taking these steps. Communities are following form with state wide requirements set out by our governor.

These days, other than people out mowing their lawns in the morning, it is so quiet. The normal background noise of kids playing in the yard down the street: gone. Traffic is a trickle. Maybe the city could have done something sooner, maybe they could do a little more. But make no mistake, the community is not ignoring the problem and hoping it will go away. We are fortunate enough to have a fine hospital here that serves the entire county. Sadly, there are coronavirus patients. At least one has died. It's very sad, was likely preventable as so much of this nightmare was. It didn't have to be this way for any of us.

It's easy to point fingers and blame the other, but now is not the time. If it bleeds, it leads: you're hearing loud noise about the worst of us with very little coverage of the rest of us because the noisy people get better ratings. The rest of us really are doing the best we can to take this seriously and deal with it responsibly. Now is not the time for picking sides for the political dodgeball team. We as a country need to try to be better than that.

We really are better than that.

Their brains don't work that way, because they're so focused on themselves, and the more immediate gratification/self-pride. That's why they're such poor leaders.

trying to "reopen" the economy by easter is a good example. that would have only caused the whole problem to last longer, cheating themselves out of long-term profit for the sake of a (futile) shot at shot-term profit.

more typically, they refuse to ever consider a higher tax rate, even if the government spends that revenue on making the economy boom, making more money for rich people even given the slightly higher tax rate.

but then, republicans are particularly warped about taxes. my mother used to do financial planning, and sometimes she'd have republicans come in and ask her to make things so the government got nothing. she said, wouldn't you rather have more money left over after taxes? they'd say no, i don't care if i have less money, as long as the government doesn't get any of it! idiotic, really.

As I'm writing this, I'm listening to the mayor of the closest (small) city to my rural town. He's doing really well on a Facebook Live. He's keeping up more work on this than Dump ever imagined doing. The nearest large city is on a pretty tight shutdown. This mayor is at least as strict. He's talking about science and the numbers here and around the world, and what he has done to shut down irresponsibility, and what he's likely to do soon if certain behavior keeps up. He's logical, well-reasoned, transparent, and very straightforward. With only 7 cases, 6 from travel (thanks, spring break kids) and 1 catching it from a sick family member they were caring for, he's talking about his next step being a complete lockdown.

So, I'm nervous about Louisiana and eastward, which also makes me worry about the Houston area based on people fleeing.

Going out on a rickety limb to predict these will all be states in Republican control. Residents of nearly half the states in the country have gone rogue and placed the rest of us in greater danger.

Red states with bare bones public healthcare programs, where the poor can't afford to see a doctor until they're half dead. The political leaders of those states will take no responsibility for willfully spreading the virus.

If Trump tried to put New York under quarantine just because he had a mad on for Cuomo, why isn't he ordering all of those 20 reckless states quarantined?

shut down for some time now. The R's that populate our legislature are horrible remaining tea-baggers and they have challenged her all along but she has gotten it done. We are, the entire state, at a "only out for food or medicine or if you work an essential job" place and will stay that way for at least 2 weeks but likely until the end of April. They called her a "tin pot dictator authoritarian" but she is tougher and smarter than they are and she just moves ahead. They came back to read her orders because they thought they were stupid but they ended up not changing them. THIS red state, with very few testing kits, has been working it's ass off to contain things. The dumb asses that do not believe in it are still there but mostly we are grateful that we can stay at home safely and when we need to get it out it is still fairly safe.

I don't like being locked down but it's there for a reason. And these morons who aren't taking this seriously are going to be hit the hardest.

I just want to get out of this nightmare as fast as possible with as minimal damage as possible. And not do anything stupid along the way. Which you know Trump will do something stupid.

I see a lot of it online, but most the people I interact with seem to understand what's going on. Even my parents who are annoying Trump-lovers seem to understand this (maybe I played a role in this, I dunno). Counties around the state have been issue shelter orders too. Not just the larger more liberal cities. Then again, I don't how much a red state Texas is these days. If only the governor would stop being a moron and make it state-wide just to do the right thing.

clearly a virus doesn't care if it attacks a liberal or a conservative but republican actions or inactions makes it more likely that the results will be worse in their states.

This thing is so huge, it's not likely to show a more positive result for months! Trump can try to campaign but I can't imagine how even a republican would be ok with his inactions while more americans become sick & more are dying every day! They may try, they've surprised me before by sinking to new lows.
