A 2018 graduate of my high school alma mater has died of Covid-19.

He was on the football team. He wasn't a 'technical' star of the team, but he was a big part of the heart of the team. Even after Freddie graduated, he attended the football games because he truly loved the sport.

Although I never met him, hearing he was a football player hit me particularly hard. The field where he played high school football is named for my Dad. He was a beloved coach, teacher and administrator, and a great mentor for generations of both those who excelled, and those who tried their best. I can picture him taking someone like Freddie under his wing.

So, if there is an afterlife, I bet my Dad was standing with St. Peter when Freddie arrived at those Pearly Gates.

No doubt that, before this is over, we will all discover varying 'degrees of separation' from a number of those who died.
