Cruise ship carrying sick and dead passengers moves toward FLA, governor says state can't take them

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A Holland America cruise ship, carrying four bodies and scores of patients with coronavirus-like symptoms, has been given permission to cross the Panama Canal, allowing them to continue their journey toward Florida, the cruise line’s president said Sunday.

The Zandaam and Rotterdam, where some passengers were transferred, may be heading to Fort Lauderdale or Miami.

But Gov. Ron DeSantis appeared on Fox News on Monday morning — and he wasn’t happy.

“We cannot afford to have people who are not even Floridians dumped into South Florida using up those valuable resources,” he said, adding he is in touch with the White House over the fate of these ships. “We view this as a big, big problem and we don’t want to see people dumped in southern Florida right now.”

They should contract out bus service to the next rented out campground, staged mobile homes, etc., and provided medical services and recuperate their sick passengers. They helped spread this virus, they own a big part of the global effort in response and obligation to their customers. This should now become standard business practice for Cruise Lines!

Dafuq does he know where everyone on that ship lives?

But, wait a minute.

The State of Florida has no income tax because they run the whole show on fees and taxes collected from visitors. They've got hotel rooms up the anus and out the wazoo. They've got millions of residents and a few guests caught in a bad situation is not going to move the needle on what's going on down there.

Shameful.

"Dumped" - like they were trash, instead of people.

Can you imagine if your loved one were on that ship and some politician didn't want them "dumped" somewhere.

The Zaandam originally departed from Buenos Aires, Argentina, on March 7, for a 14-day cruise of South America, with plans to disembark in San Antonio, Chile

Why doesn't it go back to Argentina or Chile?

Florida (where I live) is full of Snowbirds who are taxing an overtaxed health-care system. We have people from MS, LA, NY, and NJ wanting to come here to quarrantine themselves. WHY?

My husband and I are both RNs. His hospital (the largest hospital in our region) doesn't even have enough masks for patient-facing positions. They are encouraging nurses to bring fabric masks they've made from home.

We. have. no. room.

We. have. no. supplies.

I'm sorry for the people who are on this boat. I really am. But anyone who willingly got on a goddamn cruise ship on 3/7, knowing what was known then about Covid19 were idiots. I'm in no way saying that they deserve to be on this death ship -- but they need to be disembarked in either Argentina, or Chile. Not florida. Not alabama, or South Carolina or New York.

How much revenue does Carnival generate down there?

https://spacecoastdaily.com/2019/12/watch-port-canaveral-earned-3-9-billion-revenue-and-produced-32650-jobs-from-cruise-tourism/

The sea hub in Central Florida , which is the second-busiest cruise port in the world, has an economic contribution throughout the state of Florida in the past year totaling $3.9 billion, producing 32,650 jobs and $1.3 billion in wages, based on a Business Research & Economic Advisors study, which also noted that the activity across all business lines resulted in $1.94 billion in direct impact in the Central Florida economy, which contributed to the direct employment of more than 17,200 workers who received $729.4 million in wages.

The cruise segment of Port Canaveral alone generated $1.3 billion in economic impact and supported 12,964 regional jobs paying $516.6 million in annual wages.

On edit:

The Zaandam originally departed from Buenos Aires, Argentina, on March 7, for a 14-day cruise of South America, with plans to disembark in San Antonio, Chile, on March 21. By March 13, however, Holland America announced it would temporarily be suspending all sailings for at least 30 days, and ending its current cruises in progress "as quickly as possible.” Holland America said the ship was first cleared to dock and disembark passengers in Punta Arenas, Chile, but was ultimately “not permitted to do so.” The Zaandam instead docked in Valparaiso, Chile, but only for supplies and medicine.

Same with Chile.

Let's see who steps up to the plate and says yes. Virginia's not *that* far away.
