Chris Murphy
@ChrisMurphyCT
Just left the Administration briefing on Coronavirus. Bottom line: they aren't taking this seriously enough.
Notably, no request for ANY emergency funding, which is a big mistake. Local health systems need supplies, training, screening staff etc. And they need it now.
https://www.motherjones.com/coronavirus-updates/2020/03/the-us-sent-tons-of-medical-supplies-to-china-even-as-senators-warned-of-virus-threat-here/
The United States government sent nearly 17.8 tons of donated medical supplies to Chinaincluding masks and respiratorsalmost three weeks after the first case of the coronavirus was reported in the state of Washington.
In a press release from the State Department dated Feb. 7, the agency announced it was prepared to spend up to $100 million to assist China as the number of COVID-19 cases and deaths continued to rise there. The day the press release went out, Trump tweeted that he spoke with Chinas President Xi Jinping and that China would be successful especially as the weather starts to warm & the virus hopefully becomes weaker and then gone.
At the time, sending supplies overseas may have seemed like the right thing to do. But its worth noting that this release of vital medical supplies came two days after several senators, including Connecticut Democrat Chris Murphy, offered to allocate congressional emergency funding for preventative health measures and research to ward off the virus in the United Statesand President Donald Trump turned it down. Local health systems need supplies, training, screening staff, etc tweeted Murphy, and they need it now.

The Commerce Secretary a few days ago claimed that a potential coronavirus pandemic will somehow result in more job coming to the USA.

Last night, President Trump made an attempt to reassure the public on the state of the economy. It was not very reassuring. His answer implied that, however low your assessment of his grasp of the economy beforehand and mine was already extremely low the president knows even less than anybody thought possible.
Here is Trumps answer:
Well, look, we were set to hit 30,000 on the Dow. This is a number that nobody even came close to. And already we have the number. And even though its down 10 or 11 percent, its still the highest its ever been, by far. It certainly might have an impact. At the same time, I have to say, people are now staying in the United States, spending their money in the U.S. and I like that. People are now staying in the United States, spending their money in the U.S., and I like that. Ive been after that for a long time.
