(2,522 posts)Accidents can involve a number of causes, such as driving while drunk, not paying attention, faulty maintenance, etc.
Cancer can be caused by smoking, excessive drinking, genetic problems, excess sun, etc.
The flu can be caused by numerous viruses.
Pneumonia can be caused by numerous bacteria and viruses.
Covid-19 is a singular strain of virus, and it is outpacing other causes.

(34,065 posts)There have been roughly 3780 deaths from COVID since March 1. That's 30 days (not counting today). 3780/30=126 (not 558)
It claims to be an average daily number of deaths - but the reported number on 3/30 is roughly 4 times the calculated average daily number of deaths. And it puts it just behind suicide. (Still way at the bottom of the graph.)
What it uses for COVID is not the average number of deaths - but the number of deaths on each day - but compares them to the averages for all other diseases.
It is still impressive - but comparing single day deaths each day from one disease against an average number of deaths for every other kind of death without being explicit about what you are doing is misleading.
