Make No Mistake

The recent statements from some Republicans – re Trump’s suggestion that coronavirus guidelines should be lifted, and people should get back to work in order to ‘save the economy’ – were floating a trial balloon.

They were laying the groundwork for the spin they’d put on the inevitable spike in deaths as a result, casting those who would die as ‘patriots’ who were willing to risk their own lives in order to preserve the financial well-being of their fellow citizens.

It was a “we who are about to die salute you” scenario: don’t mourn grandma and grandpa’s untimely demise, because they gave their lives so their grandchildren could prosper.

Predictably, the tears of people like Glen Beck claiming they’d gladly give their own lives for the sake of saving the nation’s economy didn’t sway anyone. But the fact that the GOP even floated this idea speaks volumes about how low Republicans are willing to sink.

It's not hard to imagine how many of Trump's ass-kissing 'advisors' were urging him to do the unthinkable: “Mr. President, I'm not saying we wouldn't get our hair mussed. But I do say no more than 10 to 20 million killed, tops! Uh, depending on the breaks."

General Buck Turgidson was a charicature in 1964...today he'd be on the Joint Chiefs or on the NSC.

is a call to patriotism equivalent to 'go to work and fix the economy, and we don't care if you die in the process'?

Oh, wait!

Pretty much every soldier ever, was told to to his/her patriotic duty. Basically . . . go out and win that war for us elites, and we don't really mind if you die in the process.'

Except this isn't war.

On the one hand - 10 million deaths or more, on the other hand - the economy gets fixed, Trump can save face and claim victory, and the GOP can feel better about the next election.

I'm sure they gave it some serious thought.
