a hand sanitizer story

I don't know the name of the person involved in this. It is one of my wife's friends from her college days; he lives in Michigan.

He was unable to get hand sanitizer there, so he decided to try manufacturing his own. He has all the machinery needed to do it. He was having trouble getting what he needed for it, but finally got it: a tanker trunk load of isopropyl alcohol, arranged by the state of Michigan. What he produces will first go to first responders (doctors, EMTs, police, etc). He had been putting this in gallon jugs, but recently got a bunch of small dispenser containers. He will be filling those with sanitizer and giving them away to poor people.

It's nothing complex. It's just simple mixing. As long as he mixes thoroughly, every bottle ought to be the same.
When made commercially, it's treated under cGMP regs. So, pretty sanitary.
I'd want to be sure that MI doesn't have any liability laws about his product.
He's doing a good thing, but could run afoul of the law, & potential lawsuits. Somebody could sue if they used it and got sick anyway. People can sue over nearly anything.

See https://detroit.cbslocal.com/2020/03/20/the-detroit-bus-company-is-now-making-bulk-hand-sanitizer/

Detroit (CBS DETROIT) – The Detroit Bus Company started with a mission to “Get every Detroiter a ride where they need to go” by offering free rides to Detroit students in 2012. In 2016, they began to offer Ride for Ride which provides free rides to those in need from ticket sales of their tours and adventures. Now, the company is offering bulk hand sanitizer from The Detroit Sanitizer Company. According to their website, the sanitizer is “medical-grade isopropyl alcohol gel hand sanitizer manufactured to World Health Organization standards. Ingredients: Isopropyl alcohol. Hydrogen peroxide. Food-grade glycerin. Distilled water.” The Detroit Bus Company decided to provide the sanitizer because panic buying has made it scarce. You can buy a quart and half-gallon quantities and fill smaller containers from the larger ones they are offering. The supply is limited due to the scarcity of materials that go into making it, so this might be their only batch. Click here to order your supply or for more details.
