precautions. Just got the worse call a parent can get. Oldest son is in ER for evaluation. Passed out at the Bus Stop with Chest pains and shortness of breath. Had a nasty cold couple days ago but with a possible carrier in house, who knows. His partners Mother came in contact with a Carrier two weeks ago and gave the grandson a ride home.

(34,060 posts)Actually ulcerative colitis - but both are inflammatory bowel diseases. Diabetes - Type I or type 2?
(our child with UC and PSC - a comorbid liver disease) got the flu last week. But, of ccourse, our thoughts went immediately to COVID 19. Fortunately, her overactive immune system + tamiflu kicked it in the butt.
Is your oldest on one a biologic other than Entyvio? (Humira, Stelara, anything ending in -mab) My daughter is on Entyvio - which has less impact on the immune system.

(34,661 posts)by his diet. Everything had been going great for almost ten years until today. And because he could not afford Insurance until his Employers became available, the diet thing was doing the trick . As you are aware,Insulin with out a Insurance plan,is like a Thousand Dollar or more a month Script.
As a Chef he has been able to do tons of replacement items in his diet, until apparently last night. Carbo overload,Southwest night at his house. Oops, but,he got lucky this time. Our Daughter and I have put a game plan into place, his States sponsored Insurance open for enrollment a couple weeks ago,did the on line app earlier and set up a Call for tomorrow morning to work out the payment schedule.
My guess is,there are several thousand people in the same leaky boat.

(34,060 posts)Not strictly keto, but few enough carbs that I don't exceed normal (non-diabetic) blood glucose. I've never taken insulin - but I grew up around people who needed it, and know several now. Many are getting by with the non-prescription stuff from Walmart.
I have insurance through work - but my daughter is a $200,000/year medical miracle. Her company went bankrupt in February - she was able to enroll via open enrollment and got a decent plan based on income. The challenge now is that she'll be on three plans within 5 months - which (with her medical expenses) means about $12,000 out of pocket (on an $18,000 income).

(34,661 posts)had touched base with a fellow health care person back in Minnesota and it sounds like she found a source of free or dirt cheap Insulin,or a Insulin Substitute for the next few months. Nurses do have a ton of experience in creativity.
Will know more tomorrow.

TrDump said for three long months, it was only a hoax. We could have been doing mitigation and practiced battening down the hatches.

(34,661 posts)his local Hospital only has a few test kits available and the ER Doc's are administering them to patients who are carrying a high fever. Fortunately no fever, chest X ray negative. His Diabetes blew up and caused him to pass out. Another one of the Young People Working for a Employer who does not offer Health Care. Just heard Minn Care is open for enrollment by the Governor in a effort to try and mitigate this disaster.
Thanks again for the good words.

(34,661 posts)Sitting in ER waiting for the Chest X Rays to come back. No fever and that is why they do not test. BTW,they only have a few Test Kits for a City of 8k+. ER Doc is pissed at Trump, how stupid does he think we are, only Rich people are getting tested. Direct comment from the ER Doc five minutes ago.

(34,661 posts)good words and thoughts. Just got the good news,he is heading home. His diabetes blew up on him. And because of a lack of health Insurance, which we are taking care off tomorrow AM,Minnesota has opened up MN Care and told him we will pick up the tab. Mean while he has a script for Insulin at 1300 a pop which we are covering,we still had a open account at the local Pharmacy from my Mother in Law twenty years ago.
Thanks again friends,we dodged a big one for sure.

(34,661 posts)went nutso. All the symptoms of Covid 19. ER Doc says, they have seen folks without fevers yet still testing positive. The Kid will recover and once his Insulin kicks in,he should be okay. No health insurance, script at the local Pharmacy is 1300 for one month supply.

(5,164 posts)He can maybe get help with the insulin from his doc, they often have free samples. I am glad he is going to be ok. I am type one and my bg is crashing all the time lately. It is unpredictable most of the time anyway but I have been sick, no test for covid but my wbc was ok so doc thinks it is not covid.

(34,661 posts)we still have a open account from my Mother In law at the local Drug Store. Just for the Ha ha's ,called that Drug Store to price Insulin, ouch, but the Lady on the phone said, think you still have account with us.
So,we are making progress. Daughter called and has a Medical Rep who has samples also.

(261 posts)My sister has been sick since Friday. I urged her to get a test, and she took one on Monday morning in Spokane. She got the results this morning, and the test was positive. She is an asthmatic and is above 65. She is my only sibling, and I am very worried. It is surreal or unreal or whatever the right word might be when a loved one gets notified that they have this horrible virus.
