Would Trump try to make money off a drug stock during a pandemic?

That does appear to be the case.

It goes back to the time Novartis, the maker of the anti-malarial drug, paid Michael Cohen $1.2 million for access to the White House.

We don't know any further details about that deal.

But today, Donald Trump was promoting their drug, hydroxychloroquine, as the new cure-all for the coronavirus. Dr Fauci and other experts say any evidence of its impact on the virus is purely anecdotal. It was noteworthy that Trump did not want Dr Fauci at the briefing today as he was giving his sales pitch for the drug.

But today was not the first day that he has pitched the anti-malarial drug. He has been promoting it for the last 3-4 weeks continuously.

It is a low-life S.O.B. that would try to make money off a pandemic that is killing our people.

There are a bunch of companies producing this drug. And, they are all contributing over 150 million tablets around the world.

A month's treatment for Lupus, RA, etc., wholesales for less than $5 bucks. They don't need that much for CV19 therapy.

trump isn't going to profit financially from this. I do believe he's hawking a miracle because it's the only chance he has of coming out of this without a good portion of his ignorant white wing base abandoning him.

First of all... it isn’t “their” drug. It’s a generic that multiple companies produce and any number of them could add (I think ten were just approved).

Second... it’s incredibly cheap. There just isn’t much money to be made selling the stuff.

Third - Novartis has already announced that they’ll donate up to 130 million doses (and at least one other manufacturer had announced millions of doses). Now theres no money to be made at all.

Sure... you’ll hardly ever go wrong assuming bad motivation from this guy... but the facts just don’t fit this theory.

It just doesn't make sense in this case. You can't move the stock price on a company with ~$50Billion in sales per year by encouraging people to take a product that they're giving away, don't have exclusive rights to sell, and doesn't cost much even when they do sell it.

If there is even an iota of truth to all the suspicions I read on that twitter feed where this was rolled out, this might be the most heinous thing anyone on planet earth has ever done, and I'm serious. To not only hawk a drug that hasn't been properly tested and underperformed during flawed testing, and to then stockpile it for your citizens to make profit for yourself and god knows who else, then to give that drug to people where it could possibly kill them or cause them to not get treatment for Covid-19 is unspeakably evil. Not only that, people who need that drug can't get it right now and will suffer and possibly die. Some people on that thread said the can't get this next month because the pharmacist told them they were out. Is this even real? I'm sure the access Novartis paid for was for drugs that sell for hundreds of dollars a pill, not for something that the patent expired on before most of us were born.

Trump was willing to grasp at any straw that would help him sell the idea that the economy was going to come roaring back to life before the election, and somebody handed this one for him to clutch onto. Of course, he can never, ever admit that he might have been even in the slightest mistaken, so he's beating the dead horse as long as he can.

The simplest explanation is probably the correct one.
