I think he knows it's going to take a strong and brilliant woman to get the world out the mess we're in.

I think he was rooting for EW. Besides loving her plan, a second reason to endorse it could be to set the stage for a VP pick. These times call for her competence and level of engagement, similar to what we have in Cuomo now.
