He can't handle that kind of adoration if it's for someone other than him.
That's why I think he ordered Modly to do that insulting and stupid speech to the crew. He was hoping to turn them against Captain Crozier.
Glad it backfired.

the bruhaha over the letter, the firing, the "stupid" comment, etc., is meant to divert from the real issue. Who is the moron that sent the ship into Danang during an epidemic? Southeast Asian ports had already been closed to cruise ships for some time. The Diamond Princess fiasco had already been underway for weeks in Yokohama. Crozier noted in his letter that the Roosevelt was even more vulnerable to infection than the Diamond Princess.
So who are the morons who insisted on the Danang port visit? Whatever benefit they thought was worth the risk, wasn't. So I lay the blame with drumpf, pompeo, esper, stilwell, navarro, obrien, et al, who can't think straight when the subject China comes up, as in South China Sea.

(31,011 posts)The decisions on where the Roosevelt ports are made by the most senior officers and it was likely made some time ago. The scheduled stop was designed to strengthen diplomatic relations. Keep in mind this is one of the most strategic ships in the fleet.
The Roosevelt arrived on March 4th. Vietnam didn't lock down the country until March 30th.
It probably wouldn't have turned into a fiasco had they immediately addressed Captain Crozier's concerns from the outset rather than letting it fest to the point of endangering sailors and military readiness.

(3,299 posts)It's more vulnerable to the spread of an infectious disease. Vietnamese ports were already barred to cruise ship port calls in February.
It was an issue before they made the port call.

the Westerdam, "which had no reported cases of coronavirus while sailing, was denied entry to multiple Asian ports (Japan, Taiwan, Guam, the Phillipines and Thailand) during its time at sea before Cambodian authorities granted it clearance to dock on February 13."

Vietnam: While no official statement has been issued by Vietnam about closing its ports to all cruise traffic, the ships Norwegian Jade and AIDAvita were denied entry into three of its ports as of February 12, despite followng protocols with no reported cases of coronavirus and no Chinese passport-holders onboard. Silversea's Silver Spirit is expected to call on Da Nang on February 18.

"Keep in mind it's one of the most strategic ships in the fleet." Which is why you don't want to have the crew incapacitated by infectious disease while it's on deployment. The whole idea of a nuclear powered vessel is that you DON'T NEED to pull into port.
