exceptions to that.
If you still support Trump, it is inconceivable that you do so out of ignorance, which may have been true for some in 2016. I understand that not everyone is as immersed in politics as we are here on DU and I am willing to concede that some of the inattentive "low information" voters in that last election may have been genuinely unaware of the monstrous incompetence and moral bankruptcy of Trump. But, unless you have been comatose for these past three years, you can no longer credibly claim that excuse.
No, if you still wearing your MAGA cap, you are advertising your support and approval of transparent racism, misogyny and homophobia. You are saying that there is no value in science, no difference between fact and opinion and no reason to tell the truth unless it serves your interest better than a lie.
If your bumper sports a "Trump 2020" sticker, it is telling the world that you value wealth over integrity, you equate cruelty with strength and kindness with weakness.
You are not kind or honest. You are not generous or tolerant. You do not love or share or play well with others.
You are not nice.

(2,008 posts)Do I still leave room for someone to be merely entitled and dangerously delusional? Or is the only option "Trump supporter = shit human being"?
I think it's dangerously close to the latter.

(13,772 posts)No respect for others.
No consideration for others.
"My way or the highway" is their operative mode. All of them. Even those I initially thought were just misguided.
No, the naked compulsion to power over others underlies everything they do. With that, they can enable their greed.

(95,244 posts)There are no excuses anymore.
In 2016, someone could say, without being a complete fool 'give him a chance' or 'how bad could it be?'
Not anymore.
Now everybody knows and people who still support him must like what he's done, and want things to get worse.

(26,355 posts)Today, there's no excuse. There was no excuse in 2016, when so many checked the box for him after he mocked a disabled man, bashed a Gold Star family, incited violence against Latinxs and Muslims at his Nuremberg rallies, and bragged about you know what.
And now he's directly responsible for tens of thousands of deaths because he axed the fed's pandemic response system, and chose to sit on his ass instead of doing anything as the pandemic started to explode.
Anyone who still supports Trump today is truly a despicable piece of shit.

(3,145 posts)Nobody is forced to join the Republican Party to get a decent job or to avoid having their son sent off to the Eastern Front or to keep your business from being smashed up or seized.
The Republican Party isn't making party membership a requirement to be licensed as an Architect or Physician.
The Republican Party isn't forcing parents to sign their children up for the Trump Youth.
The Republican Party isn't forcing athletes to join in order to participate in professional sports.

i say this because i have seen a pattern with republicans (for years and years and years)--if something negatively effects them personally they might have a change of heart. otherwise, they behave in a manner that is lacking in empathy and compassion for others.

(4,607 posts)More than a few of them know black people and/or latin people they genuinely consider friends.
I personally know someone whose closest family friend is gay, and yet I stood in that person's kitchen not too long ago and listened to them tell me that a Buttigieg presidency would be unthinkable because no one would respect us if they saw our president standing with his husband.
There are profound cognitive dissonance issues at work in these people, much of which is induced by conservative media.

(10,624 posts)into believing that we (liberals) are even greater monsters.
These people literally believe that we want to outlaw churches, throw Christians in jail, declare open borders, have 9th-month abortions just for the hell of it, teach atheism in the schools, and ... somehow ... also adopt Sharia law, encourage all sorts of sexual immorality, take parental authority away from parents and give it to the state, surrender U.S. sovereignty to a "one-world" government, etc. etc..
When they believe shit like that, there's just no reasoning with them.
And you're right, *they* are the problem - not trump.

(16,685 posts)And fuck anyone who says "how can you let politics destroy relationships?" That is a grossly privileged statement that refuses to acknowledge that politics is the vehicle for creating a society that mirrors our morality and values. If you support Republicans then your values are greed, selfishness, cruelty, xenophobia, and willful ignorance. And you are putting such people in decision-making positions that actually do harm to others. That is no mere difference in opinion and shame on anyone who minimizes it as such.

(16,299 posts)Decades of propaganda, lies and a pervasive libertarian worldview has turned the Republican party into nothing more than a reactionary populist party. They care only about themselves and their families. If a liberal supports something, they will be against it, regardless of the issue.
