The price of Brent crude leapt by 30% after the US president, Donald Trump, fanned hopes of a new deal between Riyadh and Moscow to help stabilise the oil market.
<snip>
Trump tweeted on Thursday that he had spoken to Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman and expected Riyadh and Moscow to cut output by as much as 15m barrels a day.
The president initially said the oil production cut should be about 10m barrels a day, but raised the figure to 15m in a subsequent tweet. If it happens, he wrote on Twitter, it will be GREAT for the oil & gas industry!
Hopes of renewed cooperation in the oil market were later dampened by a spokesman for the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, who reportedly told journalists that no one has started talking about any specific or even abstract deals.

(64,990 posts)He's not a savvy investor. The market, despite yesterday, is only up 23% since election day, 2016. Over 41 months, that's under 7% annualized. The market was rising 12%/year under Obama.
So, if this is manipulation, it's shabby manipulation.
It's still down over 7,000 points from it's high. So it still has to rise 30% just to get back to where it was.
Point reinforced.
He's manipulating nothing. He's stabbing in the dark and once in a while, the target gets in the way.

His grasp of investing & relationships in the community are essentially nonexistent.

(35,324 posts)the market goes down. Then a few days later he will claim he solved it and the market goes up. I can't believe they are not planned by him Manuchen, Kuchner and Wilbur Ross.

He has done it many times. You are correct. Spread rumors. He's good at it.

(32,017 posts)He overlooks the part where the people to whom he was speaking never agreed to do what Trump demanded. Trump just assumes he gets whatever he asks for.
He's a spoiled, rotten brat and a bully who is accustomed to having his way. Sometimes, he doesn't get it, and then he lies and pitches a fit.
It's embarrassing. Truly.
