George Takei @GeorgeTakei (Mr Sulu on STAR TREK)
Covid-19 comparison:
U.S. deaths 12,400
South Korea deaths: 192
Both had first positive case Jan 21. They had higher population density and a supercluster of cases.
But they got lots of testing and tracking going right away.
Trump called it a hoax. This is the result.

(10,053 posts)And their capital city of Seoul has even more people than New York City - just think of those poor souls in NYC that we could have saved earlier and those that struggle to stay alive every single day still...

(15,703 posts)Arkansas dept of health has us at 18 deaths
The Johns Hopkins site says 10
And the CDC says 0 died from Covid but a lot died in Arkansas from pneumonia

(3,131 posts)S korea has 51M people
Us has 331M
About a 6x difference. S. Koreas death rate would scale to about 1200.
Were 10x higher than that.

(11,248 posts)You can also consider scaling NYC vs Seoul where cases were concentrated. Then its an insanely bad look here.
Midnightwalk
(3,131 posts)10x worse for whole country is bad enough.
I complain when units get mixed or countries comparisons arent scaled and showed some arithmetic. I always hope I dont mess up doing that.
Some of the websites show cases and deaths per million
Morbid but Ive always liked numbers.

(11,248 posts)Comparisons by city might be more correct.
Also comparison by population of infected locales and density seems even more sensible (Takei alluded to the density issue). Obviously a Manhattan infection is more worrisome than a Los Angeles infection with the density and all the public transportation versus travel by car.

(39 posts)America's is only in theory.
South Korea's entire political structure consists of a total of 18 entities (the central government, eight provinces, one special self-governing province, six self-governing cities, one special city, and one metropolitan autonomous city.
America's political structure consists of 50 states (most of them run by dysfunctional Republicans), zillions of counties (ditto), and a huge central government infrastructure designed 230 years ago.
Organizing 18 political entities during a crisis is relatively easy.
Organizing America's thousands of political entities even in a non-crisis is impossible. The system is not designed for such a thing.
Blue_true
(31,261 posts)government would respond to all external threats. There was no need to "organize". SARS-COV-19 was at one point a 100% external threat, instead of taking charge, the president was in denial, in a world of conspiracy theories.

(840 posts)New York is seeing 10x the normal number of at home deaths. Instead of 20/day it's 200/day. Only those with a prexisting positive covid19 test are counted. The rest may have it listed as "possible".
