(CNN)Two separate research projects suggest that the novel coronavirus may have been circulating in New York City earlier than thought and the earliest cases likely originated with travelers coming from Europe and other parts of the United States, not Asia.

The new data come from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and the NYU Grossman School of Medicine.

Now new data from NYU Langone Health suggests that the novel coronavirus has been spreading in New York for a couple of months now -- long before testing started -- and a genetic analysis of viral samples in the city indicate that they originated in Europe, according to an announcement from the academic medical center on Thursday.

The announcement notes that this early data was based on examining the genetic material of the novel coronavirus taken from 75 patients in New York City. Nasal swab samples were collected from the patients at Tisch Hospital, NYU Winthrop Hospital and NYU Langone Hospital Brooklyn.

"As viruses evolve during transmission from person to person, their sequences can help researchers to zero in on the provenance, or place of origin, of that specific infection," Dr. Matija Snuderl, leader of the clinical testing team and director of molecular pathology and diagnostics at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, said in the announcement.

Nevertheless, I just get ill realizing dogs and innocuous animals, and then other strange animals are consumed.

This may make me stop requiring meat from here on.

I stopped eating lamb, veal and duck ages ago. Have never eaten/would never eat venison. Just the thought alone. Shouldn't have stopped there.

Once a year on Easter that we will not be able to celebrate this year.

I agree with what you say about the wet markets. They are gross.

Husband's uncle had us for a pool party one summer and they roasted a whole lamb on a spit. Oy.

We communicated at a Greek Orthodox Church from 1985 to 2000. Loved it. Of course lamb is a Hellenic must have on the holidays. One Christmas the priest and Presvytera had us over for dinner. I did not eat the lamb but all else. I was hoping they didn't notice. And they did not. I would not bring lamb into our house even for the husband. Said, you want lamb? Go to a restaurant yourself.

But just the fact of bringing the wet markets evidence to the forefront really did things to me. It's not solely in China. Around the world. Just for me personally it bothered my soul greatly.

So my feelings about this are nothing new.

Eating feeling, sentient, conscious, emotional creatures is disgusting. And allowing them to suffer a lifetime of misery ahead of their killing is immoral.

It’s one of the things that helps me feel as though leaving this world eventually won’t be so bad. It’s a beautiful world but there is also so much unfeeling cruelty and horrific pain.

is thanks to China. They raise waterfowl and pigs together. The two eat each other's excrement, pass the influenza back and forth, which mutates along the way, and then it passes on to humans. If they were to change their waterfowl and pig raising habits, influenza would be much less of an issue than it is.

Then there are the wet markets and the demand for exotic meat. Thank you, China.

We could severely cut down on the number of outbreaks if these were truly shut down.
