Delivering the mail is a crucial part of what our government must do. So, Trump wants to stop the mail.
That should be an impeachable offense, in my opinion.

(115,596 posts)if the USPS went away. He also hates it because he thinks it's in league with Amazon, which he loathes with the fire of a thousand suns because Jeff Bezos owns it and also the Washington Post. Therefore the USPS must die. Because it's a tool of the Washington Post through Jeff Bezos and Amazon. Or something.

(22,073 posts)They absolutely depended on that mail arriving every day...my dad did, he would walk up to the mailbox several times during the day just to check and see if the mail arrived. He would literally fuss about it until it arrived finally. A lot of people are like this.
Only an idiot would propose sometime like this...I suspect that Congress will have other plans and get around his refusal to accept any monies for the post office, by overriding his threatened veto.

(31,261 posts)Democrats will take over and fix the problem, but unlike Trump, they will fix it for all Americans. So, they will get the service back quickly enough that they will suffer only minor irritation, and they will keep voting largely republican.

The PO was founded by Ben Franklin, f'godsake. Like the Press, specifically mentioned in the US Constitution. Both are a key means of communication is a free society.

(4,541 posts)How it effects me:
I pay for my dental premium monthly, by mail.
If I use any other form or method of payment, I am hit with a fee which is as large as the premium. Not sure why, since its the 21st century. All forms of payment should be free of fees.
But the point is, doing away with the postal service would be catastrophic.
Trump is a dangerous ass.

(25,183 posts)the Founding Fathers were, there were a lot of things they did not foresee.
Yes, they knew that a mail service was an essential for a country that was to govern itself, as well as newspapers. When those were the best ways to spread current news and information, it made sense for them to support those institutions.
They certainly could not have imagined radio, television, and the Internet. Those are the ways that modern people use to communicate, and they're not going away, nor do they need to be subsidized.
Two hundred years ago, nobody could foresee junk mail, either. Some 75% of what we get is that, it would be lower, but my lady prefers some things to be mailed, I have all of my bills, bank statements, etc. coming online, and I pay that way, too. If we really need dead-tree advertising sent all around the country by fossil fuel burning vehicles, then have advertisers pay the costs of that.
