I truly think that there is a school of thought on the right, both in America and the UK, that this pandemic, while hitting the economy hard, will have long term benefits in terms of decreased funding for social care and eldercare. We know in the UK that the tory government has ignored the funding crisis in social care for a decade, and that Trump wants to reduce the budget for medicare etc. Now it may be that so many are dying because they are just incompetent arseholes, but because the virus seems to be attacking most those that cost society more to support, you know the old and the vulnerable, you just know that there are some who will see an upside in this...

If you look at trump's actions it is apparent that this is by design. Won't release from the NSP, tells states they are on their own. When states have confirmed orders for much needed supplies, trump goes in, cancels the orders and seizes the equipment. 90% of which is never seen again.
