Coronavirus spread closes North American meat plants

Major meat companies in the United States and Canada have closed plants temporarily due to cases of the new coronavirus and concerns about its spread.

Here are some facilities that have shut or reduced production:

* JBS USA shut a beef plant in Souderton, Pennsylvania, until April 16, after previously cutting production.

* JBS reduced production a beef plant in Greeley, Colorado, due to high absences among workers, according to the local United Food and Commercial Workers union. The company said high absenteeism led slaughter rates to outpace the process of cutting carcasses into pieces.

As the rural areas start to be infected, they may be the hardest hit due to various factors like age, chronic illnesses, poor or no health care, etc.

Many plants rely on rural workers, so we should expect food shortages and potentially skyrocketing prices over the next few months. As most articles on this indicate, we still rely on migrant workers, (who are being singled out for no help during this crises) to pick food and the farmers are at loss of what to plant for the next season during this.

The health of packers, pickers and farmers is going to affect the entire country and our exports for the foreseeable future.

To top it off, SNAP does not go far as it is, and as prices increase that will put more hardship on people who have relied on it or who are new applicants. Meanwhile, the food pantries are overwhelmed and running out of food. Also, the many volunteers who help distribute the food are decreasing rapidly.

The price of plain old white eggs has gone up dramatically. The brown eggs were 60 cents a dozen cheaper than the store brand white eggs.

You're absolutely correct about how C-19 will affect the breadbasket of this country. Good thing we've got a few months of non-perishable food stored up.

Just gets deeper and deeper.

When people cannot get food for a while, the shit will have us struggling to survive. And if surviving becomes impossible for enough people there may be food riots and stealing, because the food is gone. And most people don't have enough to pay rent let alone the insane prices of food when it's scarce.Looks like the Richie Richie's are gonna become food.
And trump might be out sooner than January..Eventually.. I for one will be starving right along with everyone else.
