You have the largest military in the history of mankind. You have multiple intelligence agencies and assets. You have direct contacts with the leaders of China.
You have the information at your disposal. You have the ability to act. You have the responsibility to warn and prepare the American people and the world.
Blaming an external organization for your failure to lead is weakness.

(11,726 posts)The WHO was caught flat footed, but recovered and started getting the warnings out.
The reality however, is that Trump screwed up the response. He said he was going to ban travel to/from China in February despite WHO advising against it (WHO's mistake). Trump's ban however, wasn't based on anything except his bigotry against the Chinese. 430 thousand people still traveled from China the the US after the "ban". We had one infection, then some more. Trump could have moved aggressively, but he spent the entire month of February wasting time.
Trump is to blame for the spread of the virus in the US.

Also, the lethality of our weapons.
That's quite a stretch. Amount of $ spent does not = "largest" in most people's minds. Most expense, yes.
But, okay.

(2,120 posts)Well, I know a little bit of history, for one thing. I spent 40 years with the US military, so there's that also.

The US has a large military now, but not the largest, which probably currently goes to China. But certainly not in the history of mankind. That probably goes to the Russian Army at the end of WWII.
Who had the largest military in history?
Red Army post-1945 should be the biggest and most power army in history. It had more soldiers than any other nation, it had more and better tanks than all the other combatants combined. It also had perfected the massive armored attack tactics.
What was the largest army (military) in History? (WWII ...

If you look at percentages of then current world populations you can look at the Roman Legions and the Mongol hordes.

There's lots of history out there if you wish to look for it. But in no case is the current US military the largest in the history of mankind.

(2,120 posts)The post under discussion was about the "largest" military. You'll get lots of arguments about what constitutes "best" or "most powerful". In fact, I spent the last couple of years of my military career on DoD study groups addressing that exact question as it pertained to Unmanned Autonomous Combat Vehicles (UACV) and how to war-game their effectiveness.

(2,120 posts)nor do most people think that way.
If the Lamborghini xxx Roadster was the most expensive and most powerful car in the world, would anyone then think that it was the "largest" car in the world? I don't think so.
Words have meanings. It is best to stick to established meanings to avoid confusion. That was one of the big sticking points when I was on various DoD study groups. We had to be VERY careful on the selection of words to describe anything. And to make it worse, the different services (Army, Navy, Air Force, etc.) have different perceptions and different definitions of many words that we commonly use to describe "performance" and "efficiency". We had to be very careful to use words that were commonly accepted in our reports to higher authority. (And then the politicians got involved ..... )

(24,396 posts)is so monumentally stupid that I almost can't believe that it's happening. This is a time to be working together with the world community to get this under control. It's hard to believe that not only is Trump falling down on the job HARD, but he seems to be actively SABOTAGING and crippling everybody's ability to deal with it at both the global AND national level.

(101,271 posts)He is going to use that military, intelligence agencies, contacts with other countries including China etc. for that. What state the USA is in after that is a minor concern to him, though he'd undoubtedly prefer to avoid another impeachment.
He truly doesn't think he has a responsibility at all, and said so. He probably cannot spell it, literally. He only understands "weakness" in terms of winning or losing, and the election is the only measure of that he now recognizes. He thinks attacking China and defunding the WHO gets him more votes, so he's done it. There is no way of shaming him into having empathy, honour, or decency. He's spent 70 years resisting that. It can't be turned around 7 months.

The World Health Organization (WHO) is working with officials in Thailand and China following reports of confirmation of the novel coronavirus in a person in Thailand.
The person was a traveler from Wuhan, China, and was identified by Thai officials on 8 January, and hospitalized that day. The person is recovering from the illness according to Thai officials.
The possibility of cases being identified in other countries was not unexpected, and reinforces why WHO calls for on-going active monitoring and preparedness in other countries. WHO has issued guidance on how to detect and treat persons ill with the new virus.
The genetic sequencing shared by China enables more countries to rapidly diagnose patients.
WHO reiterates that it is essential that investigations continue in China to identify the source of this outbreak and any animal reservoirs or intermediate hosts.
Given developments, WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus will consult with Emergency Committee members and could call for a meeting of the committee on short notice.
