General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI think Republicans are going to get wiped out this November.
I am usually a pessimist of major proportions regarding elections.
And maybe this is just a false sense of optimism brought about by low blood sugar or getting adequate sleep (for once).
But I awoke today with a feeling that the mood of the country has turned so vociferously against everything Republican that they are going to be wiped out this fall.
That goes for president, Senate, and the House.
All will flip Blue and with a majority in the Senate that is filibuster proof.
State governorships will flip.
State houses will flip.
Mayoral races will flip.
I think the R after a name is as toxic as the water in Flint and the air coming out of Agolf Twitler's pie hole.
They are going to be decimated from sea to shining sea.
Call, canvas, donate, do what you can to make this happen!
YES WE CAN.

(12,286 posts)The Rs did everything they could to screw the voters and tilt the field for the conservatives, especially the judge.
They only had 5 polling places where they usually have 180.
They made people vote in th middle of a pandemic.
And still they came.
The vote was overwhelming
And I think regardless of their dirty tricks, voter suppression, purges voter rolls, ID laws, and myriad other ways they try to fuck with the vote, it will still be so overwhelming they will be all but wiped off the map.
DFW
(54,291 posts)It certainly CAN happen. Look at 2008. But back then, Rove and Cheney knew that there was no way any Republican was going to win the White House short of military intervention on their part, so they backed down, and instead put Citizens United into start position, which they had already started with over 5 years before it was actually upheld by the Roberts Court. This time, they have their Roberts Court, but will probably lose it if the Democrats hold the White House for 12 years. If they let Trump get sent to the political version of the bottom of the Mariana Trench, it's only because they plan to let it be a temporary four year setback.
The key to true victory, besides the obvious Biden win over Trump, will be the victory of Amy McGrath over Moscow Mitch McTurtle in Kentucky. They would rather detonate a hydrogen bomb over Louisville than let THAT happen, and we have to make sure it happens anyway.

(38,414 posts)The current "Republican Party" has a whole lot of money..." to come back" Never underestimate the power of money in politics. And also, that money can buy politicians who seem....very moderate and honest compared to Trump..& in opposition to Trump..
..It surely seemed that the Republicans Party was ........"dead after FDR,,and Harry Truman".....
seemed that way...What party was Dwight D Eisenhower?.............and if the Republican Party is beaten to a pulp in November's election..(if that happens) then it will regroup in a couple of years and fight again with unlimited money in 2024. Never underestimate your opponent. Never.
Stuart G
(38,414 posts)....What I was arguing, was the long range outlook....after we win big in November,,,I may have presented the wrong idea to people..
....My thinking is there will be some kind of "Puke Party" in 2024 or 2028. It may not be called Republican, but our two party system has a long history in the U.S.A. With enough money, an opposition party to our Democratic Party is very likely to exist in one way or another. The Eisenhower example was presented to show that even after 20 years of strong Democratic leadership, that the Republican Party survived.
...And YES...This November will be a disaster for Trump and Republicans...Some experienced and very bright Republicans know what is coming...but Trump doesn't have a clue. (in my opinion)..

Short of that, the GOPee is going to hold some Senate seats, but still lose a few. It's feasible that we could pick up enough to gain a 50-50 tie, or even gain a majority of one or two, but the odds of getting much more are pretty slim.

(1,752 posts)going to go willingly. I soooo hope Im wrong, but the mainstream repub party is not the same as it was in 2015/16. It is now in open alliance with white nationalists and far rw radicals whose intention is to blow everything up (metaphorically speaking). The mainstream repubs are quite ok with the chaos and conflict perpertrated by the cult leader.... after all their openly stated intention for decades now has been to "shrink govt until its small enough it can be drowned in a bathtub" and replace it with .... what..... soviet style oligarchy? Feudalism? They never say, but its some form of the rich get even more obscenely rich, and the poor get stomped into the ground. The middle class disappears into nothingness.
In spite of.... no, because of.... the cult leader's shenanigans, they have been making great progress towrds that goal.
The 30% of america who are cultists have been fed ever more twisted alt-reality propaganda, and are ever more entrenched in their alt beliefs. Last night on Coast to Coast - now a pathetic shadow of what it used to be - some lady was spinning some bizarre tale about how it was Dr. Fauci was involved in the Chinese Lab in wuhan creating these viruses

It "should be" a wipe out for the whole repuKKKe party if the Democratic Party and associates can get their messaging out there effectively.
dRumpf and the GOPutin Party have tons more money, but we should have enough to get the job done. This rests squarely on the backs of the DNC.

(18,483 posts)for nearly 50 years, probably will for another 50.
I don't need them wiped out right now, defeated will do just fine.
If we want to win, the best path to that goal is to wake up every day assuming we are 10 points behind. Doing that each and every day up to November 3, and taking actions to overcome that deficit, will be more effective than trading hi-fives over how poorly Republicans are doing. Let 2016 be a warning, we assumed victory was "in the bag."
I believe however, no matter what we do, it is mathematically impossible to get a filibuster proof majority. ETA- it is mathematically possible but Democrats would have to win 91% of the Senate races

(10,102 posts)recent elections in Kentucky and Virginia last year showed Democrats are still engaged and angry. And that was before impeachment, a deadly pandemic and an economic crisis that will persist beyond the November election.
Trump has absolutely nothing to run on, he has been a complete failure, and all but his most diehard followers realize it. Republicans have lashed themselves to the mast of Trump's sinking presidency, they too will pay the price. As always, turnout will be key to winning big.

Instead, go and volunteer for DOWN-BALLOT CANDIDATES.
That means EVERYTHING - from school board/library board, village/town councils and mayors, city councils/mayors, county executives/legislators, judges, comptrollers, secretaries of the state, state assembly/state senate, governors, House reps, Senators, etc.
Forget about spending $$$ and time on national candidates. Go local. The races there are just as important, maybe even more so, because that's the most contact most of us have with elected officials. Your money, skills and time go further when you go local.

Any republi-CONS at any level will do their level best to stand in the way - if for NO other reason than to be able to point toward us and criticize us for breaking all our promises/going back on our word (as they'll characterize it, no doubt) and not doing anything.
Jimmy Carter had to try to clean up nixon's mess - and at least restored some level of trust and respectability to the Presidency.
Bill Clinton had to clean up the reagan/bush mess - and the massive economic damage that short-sighted cheapskate IGMFU* "trickle-down" caused.
Barack Obama had to clean up the bush/cheney devastation - economic implosion, illegal Iraq War/torture-on-parade, and the long slow agonizing climb-back-up-from-Hurricane-Katrina mess.
Now it's gonna be up to Biden, if he gets in, to clean up not merely the usual reckless, thoughtless, mercenary, IGMFU* republi-CON cataclysmic destruction and epic devastation of trump/pence.
