By Monday, the police in a small New Jersey town had gotten an anonymous tip about a body being stored in a shed outside one of the states largest nursing homes.
When the police arrived, the corpse had been removed from the shed, but they discovered 17 bodies piled inside in a small morgue, intended to hold no more than four people.
They were just overwhelmed by the amount of people who were expiring, said Eric C. Danielson, the police chief in Andover, a small township in Sussex County, the states northernmost county.
The 17 were among 68 recent deaths linked to the long-term care facility, Andover Subacute and Rehabilitation Center I and II, including two nurses, officials said. Of those who died, 26 people had tested positive for the virus.

(11,728 posts)I'm keeping close tabs on my 89 y/o friend in her facility, and so far, so good. But getting information is difficult. Even without this virus, facilities keep patients, families and care workers in the dark. It's corporate policy. It's like corporate think none of the residents or their families or care workers are on to them... They're all mini trumps. If it weren't for our amazing Governor Kate Brown (who the republicans and nuts are always trying to recall) didn't lock down these facilities right away, the death toll would be crippling.

(61 posts)It is very heartbreaking to read. In our town, a lot of the people getting sick are older (they say it's the people in nursing homes getting infected) but we have also had people in their 50s and 60s get this virus as well. We also have a really run down nursing home and supposedly they haven't gotten any cases (makes me wonder if they are even testing for it.)

(90,202 posts)...how many among them are sick.
Rachel has been covering US nursing homes and vet's nursing homes every night -- alone. There's nobody else covering this, including any governmental entity. She says you have to read the local papers (many, many local papers) to divine what's going on.
It is horrendous.

(42,210 posts)In part due to understaffing.
I suspect mismanagement, but at the same time, we need to pay these workers a hella lot more than minimum wage.

(11,728 posts)Everything is so tight lipped, you wouldn't believe it. These corporations that own these facilities are like mini trump administrations, and I'm not exaggerating. They keep residents, staff, families, care workers, all in the dark as long as possible and string them along. Corporate will let conditions deteriorate completely before they bring the state or authorities in. You know how the evangelists con old folks, it's kinda like that. The bilk them for every dime, including extra for showers, meds to their rooms, meals to their rooms, etc... There's really no such thing as assisted living. What the residents pay for is someone to be there in case of emergency, med schedule (resident pick up), meals in dining area). If they hit their button, sometimes it takes two hours. If a resident is on the floor and unconscious, it could be until morning. Some facilities are definitely better than others, but every facility will nickel and dime residents in the form of a point system. It's horrendously expensive and cruel.

(25,896 posts)How awful. What were they going to do, just let the bodies keep piling up? It's crazy.
Those poor people. At least now maybe they'll get some decent help, but for some it's already way too late.
