Elon Musk Promised Ventilators. None of Them Showed Up

Over the past few weeks, Elon Musk's public statements on ventilators have included statements that Tesla would manufacture them if needed, that he had purchased 1,000 "FDA approved ventilators," and that he had sent those to hospitals.

The problem is no hospitals have actually received ventilators from Musk or Tesla. The California Governor's office has said none of the hospitals in that state have received any ventilators that were promised.

Last week I (article author Jason Aten) wrote about how Tesla was building a ventilator out of Model 3 car parts. Those devices are impressive and even ingenious, but so far, it appears they haven't been produced or delivered to health care providers. I reached out to Tesla for comment, but the company didn't respond to my inquiry.

Setting aside the fact that this particular promise relates to life-saving equipment in the middle of a pandemic, when you make a promise, you have to keep it. Making bold promises is easy, and it's something Musk is quite good at. Delivering, on the other hand, is often hard work and messy.

What you say matters, for sure. What you do, however, is everything. When you make a promise, you put your reputation (and that of your company) on the line, and you create an expectation that your audience can depend on you. If you fail to keep your promise, it isn't just your credibility that takes a hit.

people at sewing machines making makeshift masks
people with their 3D printers making shields
people jury-rigging things into ventilators

This says great things about the people doing it, but the model isn't scalable, and we need more of everything. Now.

It says horrible things about industry. And the federal government.

To rescue the kids trapped in an underwater cave?

He's a liar and just as conceited as Trump. He's also vindictive and libeled one of the rescuers by calling him a pedophile (and was somehow exonerated for it).

Tesla did build the "sub", but it wasn't used. I would hardly compare Musk to Trump, as Musk is literally a rocket scientist, an engineer, and his products actually work.

If you actually READ the court transcript of the trial, you would know that while Musk made a complete ass of himself in that instance, the man he "libeled" was as big an ass.

It keep reading this lie, and it is predicated on claims that BiPaP machines are not ventilators. However, Johns Hopkins and other medical professionals disagree:

Some medical problems can make it hard for you to breathe. In these cases, you might benefit from bilevel positive airway pressure. It is commonly known as “BiPap” or “BPap.” It is a type of ventilator—a device that helps with breathing.

One type of non-invasive mechanical ventilation is called CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) and another is called BiPAP

The source of this lie is stock are short-sellers who stand to make a lot of money by driving down the price of Tesla stock. Musk can be a bit of a dick at time, but by and large he delivers what he promises (and no, I do not own stock in the company)

Many may not recall how Musk downplayed what we are going through:

Am I surprised that none of the ventilators haven't showed up?

NO I am not
