I just bought some more bar shampoo. That means no plastic bottle and no toxins spread into the environment from making them. When I run out of conditioner I am going to buy bar conditioner also.
And of course, bar soap. Plenty of really good environmentally friendly bar soaps around. I like to shop at Etsy but Amazon, Ebay and other places have them and they are not that expensive.
I've bought environmentally friendly dish soap and dishwasher soap but I want to find a better house for them than plactic bottles.

From bottled water alone, the US throws away enough plastic bottles in one week to encircle our planet 5 times! Thats just 5% of the global population.
Globally, we use 160,000 plastic bags every second!
These plastics when thrown in landfills or elsewhere, find their way into our oceans killing the marine mammals that mistake them for food. This is just the tip of the plastic garbage issue thats alarming environmentalists these days.
What makes plastic so harmful to humans, animal and plant life and our environment is that theyre non-biodegradable. It only starts degrading in 700 years. This means that all the plastic that has ever been produced has not degraded yet.
Even when it degrades, it doesnt turn into some other form that gets absorbed by nature. It photo-degrades, which means it only breaks down into smaller toxic bits of itself. Its forever there. Pollution from plastic affects the air, land and oceans.
---------------------------------
When plastic is produced, its made from toxic materials such as benzene and vinyl hydrochloride. It is destined to be toxic from birth to forever. These chemicals are known to cause cancer, and the manufacturing byproducts contaminate our air and soil. The type of plastic that is the major source of dioxin is PVC.
Phthalates are another toxic chemical added to plastics to make them softer and more pliable. It is known to affect our fertility, disrupt our endocrine glands, birth defects and other health problems. The problem with phthalate is that they are not chemically bound to the products, so theyre easily evaporated into the air. That new plastic smell is the smell of phthalates off-gassing. Dont sniff it!

How you can help stop pollution from plastics
Wed like to say ban plastics! Recycling it is not solving anything. We just turn it into one toxic form to another. But until we find a new material to replace it, the best thing to do is to cut down on the use of plastics. Carry your own bags when shopping. Recycle all your plastics. Keep it away from the landfill and away from the ocean.
It may seem like a small effort but its not. Together, we can drastically lower our plastic wastes. When theres less demand for plastic, there will be a decrease in production too. This is your power as a consumer! You can lessen the demand.
We have created a world littered with plastics in 60 years. With all our technology and with our increasing awareness, we can still turn it around and prevent our children from inheriting a plastic Earth.

(5,640 posts)It is a shame that now with the CV-19 we can not use our own bags anymore. We had to switch to grocery pickup and now have no control on the plastic bags.

I wish I could do more.

(9,651 posts)I have done it for over 25 years
it has to be some odd emergency for my family to buy a water bottle, i started doing it to save money as we were raising 6 kids and just getting a drink @ a fast food place took a ten spot but I have literally saved tens of thousands of plastic bottles from the landfill doing it
our fav tea and Gatorade come in bottles that have big enough openings to get a bottle brush in so that helps
I wish every gallon container had a big enough opening so you could get your hand in it to clean it and reuse it

(51,445 posts)son just called me old fashioned since I have no liquid hand soap. No plastic bottles for me.
It's easy to forgo bottled water, just get a jug. Sad to say but 6 years ago we probably used 2 crates of water a week including what we bought for hubby's job. We switched to jugs and he switched to delivered water at work and haven't bought any bottles of water since. I shudder to think how much plastic we were responsible for using before.
We even invested in new double paned windows while we could still use the energy credit since our windows were 30 years old and leaky. This is saving a lot of money on our monthly energy bills.

(22,478 posts)I'm going to just say, "No" from now on. I used to think, "Well one won't hurt" but I believe now I need to stand up for my principles.
My electric bill went way down when we got hurricane windows and also when I put extra insulation in the attic.

(42,302 posts)We have hard water here with a lot of phosphate, so the "natural" cleaning solutions don't work for the dishwasher or clothes washer.
I've used my own bags for many years for grocery shopping - long before it was a thing. Right now, we're getting our groceries delivered so we've got gobs of plastic bags. I can't wait to take them to the local Publix and put them in their recycling box.
We have several metal and reusable water bottles that we wash and reuse. I have my own mesh bags for produce.
I buy biodegradable trash bags. We create only 1-2 bags a week - we recycle everything we possibly can.

Thanks for the information!
