It's possible he was put up to it, but he is not a strategic thinker or a multidimensional analyst.

He looks at everything as a message and only a message. How will it sound to the rubes? Distraction is it's own and only reward.

Nobody in his inner circle could have thought of this. If it is intentional, it came from an industry insider who successfully manipulated the idiot in chief.

WHY did McConnell's Republicans refuse to act and specifically block all action to contain the virus -- from the very beginning? All the while Democrats were trying to pass needed legislation? It was not the ignorance, or the complaisance, that Republican-friendly media are making it out to be, in the rare instances when they don't help McConnell & Co stay off the media stage. They knew what it was, they knew who it would kill, they knew the actions they needed to legislate to stop it, and they blocked them all.

I really really want it to work (I want hydroxychloroquine to work too), but the sudden breakthrough news Thursday afternoon sounded fishy. And maybe this is why:

Gilead is not set to release data on the drug until the end of this month into May. Again this reads like Hydroxychloroquine II, where people desperate for good news are latching on to any scrap they can get, all the while serving as a useful pump-and-dump scheme.
