A coronavirus outbreak has sickened at least 37 children at a Chicago shelter for unaccompanied and undocumented immigrant youth, and officials there said Thursday that they've been scrambling to test all the children in their care and to isolate those who are positive for the virus.
The outbreak occurred at a shelter in the Bronzeville neighborhood of Chicago, where 69 children separated from their parents or guardians at the Southern border are housed, officials said.
The crisis has prompted demands from child advocates that the federal government expedite the release of the children in such shelters to the custody of relatives in the United States.
"The reality for most of these children is that there is a way for them to be released to relatives here in the U.S. and that's what the government should be doing right away," Mony Ruiz-Velasco with the West Suburban Action Project, an Illinois community-based social justice organization, told ABC station WLS-TV in Chicago.
